Elbphilharmonie | Hamburg | 2016Honor to whom honor is due – the Streets of Nuremberg congratulate Hamburg to a splendid opening of their new iconic concert house Elbphilharmonie, one of the largest and acoustically most advanced concert halls in the world. I just finished watching the fabulous live broadcast of the opening ceremony and concert in the presence of German President Gauck, Chancellor Merkel and 2000 invited guests. The music inside was accompanied by a spectacular light-show on the outside.

Elbphilharmonie | Hamburg | 2016The Elbphilharmonie, built on the Grasbrook peninsula in Hamburg’s Hafen City (Harbour City), was built by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron on top of a historic brick warehouse. Its superstructure out of glass resembles a hoisted sail or an ocean wave and reaches a hight of 110 meters. Construction took all of nine years and the cost was close to 800 million Euros. The concert hall is in the middle of the top part together with a Five Star Hotel and 45 luxury apartments. The platform between then warehouse and the glass top is accessible by the public and offers a splendid view over the Hamburg City and the Elbe river with its harbor.

Splendid photos – I loved my weekend in Hamburg three years ago and plan to return. I didn’t get chance to visit Miniature World so I want to head back to see all those model trains.
Thanks so much LMT, appreciate it. You need to return to Hamburg and go to the Miniature Wonderland, it is splendid. The landscapes they modelled are awsome (they are completing Italy now) and they have a full blown airport including planes that take off and land. They also have a model of the Elbphilharmonie that opens up and shows you the concert room inside….amazing.
