Weekly Photo Challenge: Evanescent

“Evanescent” – soon passing out of sight; quickly fading or disappearing – this is the title of this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge from Word Press’ “The Daily Post”.

When I read this week’s theme in my WP reader I was just traveling by bus from Nuremberg to Berlin where I will spend the long weekend we have here in Germany due to our public holiday on Thursday.

Looking out the window I couldn’t imagine a more appropriate example of “evanescent”, as every single second the landscape in front of my window was disappearing behind the bus riding on the Autobahn.

For many more photos and a description of the technique I used continue after the jump…

I remembered a technique I once tried of creating streaks of colors and scenery by shooting with a slow shutter speed out of the window of a moving car or train and, while pressing the shutter, panning the camera backwards (against the driving direction).

So I took out my camera (Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the mZuiko 14-150mm F4.0-5.6 travel zoom), set the shutter speed to 1/8 sec and started shooting away.

This technique creates this blurred dreamy land-/ tree scapes with seemingly a lot of contradictory movements within the frame.

It is really a lot of hit and miss, and works particularly well if you have multiple layers in the scenery.

It is worth experimenting with different shutter speeds and focal lengths.

As usual with photography, take your camera and have fun. Actually, this afternoon’s creations were the perfect past time during an otherwise boring bus ride.

I wonder what my co-passengers though of me madly snapping at seemingly nothing for the good part of an hour.

Have a great Thursday!

  1. Marcus, these photos are spectacular! The effect is almost impressionistic. It’s not so easy to create this effect but you did a fabulous job.

  2. Very dreamy! At least you found something productive to do on the bus ride! I’m going to try that today on our long car ride from New Orleans to Little Rock.
