After a six week hiatus I was back in Rose City this week. And amazingly, the weather matched the season, with some beautiful and warm summer days. Despite a fully loaded schedule I managed a small photowalk last evening, just taking my tiny Ricoh GR II that I had brought for this trip and doing a bit of walking through a mild Portland summer evening. I was looking for the famous “Keep Portland Weird” sign that I haven’t seen before, and that set the tone for the rest of my walk. For some more “weird” photographs from PDX continue after the jump…

Henri Cartier-Bresson once said: “Sharpness is a bourgeois concept”. Not that I want to excuse this shot of the German Shepherd riding “wide open” in this car that turned the corner in down town Portland. I included the photo because despite being blurred, for me it captures the “weird” summer atmosphere I experienced in Rose City last night.

  1. I enjoyed your photography. While I agree a crisp photo can be great, a blurry photo can also show more. A person so fast they can’t be caught, a quick snap of friends that “couldn’t be more perfect”, and so much more. I’ll enjoy looking at more as you continue to post!

  8. The motion blur on “passenger” is excellent. It gives your photograph context. It suggests a busy nightlife and the dog hints at the weird and strange things that happen at night. It’s FAB. I also like “voodoo” catching the woman looking at the graffiti makes me wonder what she’s thinking. Does she find it funny/bizarre/frightening. Thanks for sharing your walk.

  17. Hahaha…..Love the images. Have been to Oregon a few times. Oregoneons have a fascination with ‘weird’ – Eugene has few of those signs as well. May be ‘weird’ is the new normal….
