Around the World in Twelve Days

Lufthansa B747-8 Event

Phileas Fogg did it in eighty days. The protagonist of Jules Verne’s famous novel circumnavigated the world in 80 days, to win a wager of 20,000 pounds with members of London’s Reform Club. Accompanied by his French servant Passepartout and followed by a detective named Fix (who suspected Fogg had robbed the Bank of England), his travels, by all means available in the Victorian world of the 19th century, were full of adventures. He made it back to England on time, won the bet and even brought himself an Indian princess he saved from a fiery death.

My travel around the world will, by all means, be a lot less glamorous and adventurous. If all goes well it will take me 12 days. And I will travel westbound. The route is Nuremberg – Frankfurt – Vancouver – Portland – Vancouver – Taipei – Shanghai – Seoul – Tokyo – Munich – Nuremberg.

Fore some more info and a few more of colorful airplane photos I took at a Lufthansa event a while back continue after the jump….

Lufthansa B747-8 Event

To do a “Round the World” is special, even for a seasoned business traveler like me. I had to wait all of thirty years for my first. The reason for it is that after some days of work at our main project site in Portland this week, members of the project management team will travel to local project sites in Asia for a series of one day meetings. So after flying to Oregon tomorrow I will continue on to Taiwan next Sunday morning, where I will arrive Monday evening (due to crossing the date line westbound).  So it’s Taipei on Tuesday, Shanghai on Wednesday, Seoul on Thursday, Tokyo on Friday. And as its closer from Japan to Europe going westbound, I will complete my “Round the World” with my return flight to Nuremberg on Sunday.

I guess I will be pretty wrecked when I get home. And I doubt I will see much (if any) of Taipei, Seoul (never been to those two cities) and Shanghai (which I know pretty well, after being stranded there when the eruption of the Icelandic volcano shut down air traffic for over a week in 2010). But I have a free Saturday in Portland this weekend and another in Tokyo (where I also have never been) next weekend, and I’m really looking forward to that. And I can add numbers 54-56 to my visited countries map.

The photos, by the way, I took on an event in Frankfurt where Lufthansa introduced the Boeing 747-8 to their fleet. For an airplane nut like me this was some really special. Besides the first plane of the new Jumbo Jet generation there was also an Airbus A380 in the hangar, the giant double decker also being a marvelous plane. The camera used that evening was a Nikon D7000 with the 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 Nikkor zoom. All shots were done handheld and raw processed in Lightroom.

Well, let’s see what the trip around the globe brings photographically. It definitely will bring a lot of time in various airplanes. If there is something nice to see, I will take you along and post it here on the Streets of Nuremberg. I will bring my Olympus PEN-F with the 14-150mm f/4-5.6 travel zoom along. Stay tuned!

Have a great week!

Marcus

    1. Yeah, it’s a good airline, no doubt. I’m sitting in Vancouver now waiting to board my Air Canada flight for Taipei. Looking forward to do a “benchmark” 😉 ! Have a good Sunday! Marcus

  1. Hope all goes well with the continuance of your trip! It is a shame if you don’t get any free time in Seoul and Taipei, both cities I know very well. I am envious though that you get time in Tokyo as that is still on my list! And, you are way ahead of me as far as countries visited as I am on a lowly 37!

  2. Wonderful photos and try to enjoy your trip and looking forward to the photos, as I am sure you will manage to take a few 🙂 Safe journey Marcus 🙂 Lynne

  3. It seems you have very tight schedules, Marcus. Nice to know that you’ll have chances to see Taipei and Seoul. Can’t wait to see the posts. And May you have pleasant bussiness trips..

  4. spectacular pictures! Around the world trip!! How cool is that?! (I pretend to not be jealous…not AT ALL…..grrrrr….) even if its quick and perhaps not-to-see-much-at-all….still a cool journey! enjoy…try to get the most out of it!

  5. Wish you a safe and relaxing traveling, Marcus. These are fabulous photographs! Colors are so amazing.

  6. I expect you will indeed be wrecked after this trip, Marcus — but I also expect it will be well worth sacrificing a bit of sleep. What a wonderful adventure! Safe travels, and I look forward to any photos or observations you care to share.
