Around the World in 12 Days – On the Streets of Tokyo

Tokyo Asakusa Street LifeMy last update on my business trip around the word came from Shanghai. After spending one night and an intense business day in the Chinese megacity I took a China Southern A320 to Seoul, where I got into my hotel in Pangyo at 9pm in the evening. Dead tired I went to bed immediately, got up at 4am, did emails and calls and went to the office. There was just no opportunity for any photography at all. But I was absolutely blown away by the friendliness of our Korean colleagues, they went out of their way to make me feel welcome. So my memories of Korea will be that of super friendly people and great food I got when they took me to lunch. Then it was off to the airport again, this time a Korean Air Boeing 777-300 took me in 1h 50min to Tokyo’s Haneda airport, then I took a taxi to my hotel near Shinagawa Station. After a productive day in the office and finishing all the meetings on Friday afternoon I took the subway to Asakusa , the center of Tokyo’s shitamachi district, an old town part where the atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades has survived. Besides the narrow alleys the main attraction is Sensoji, a very popular Buddhist temple, built in the 7th century.  To see some random photos of the Asakusa area and the local street life continue after the jump….Tokyo Asakusa Street Life

So this was the first outing of the “Streets of Nuremberg” on the Streets of Tokyo. I hope you enjoyed this random collection of photos from Asakusa. I will explore more of Japan’s megacity tomorrow.

I wish everyone a great weekend!

Marcus

  1. Nice Marcus… love the narrow street shot with the spider’s web of cables. Always a shot that fascinates me due to the impossible complexity one couldn’t arrive at if wanted.
Just back from a trip to Sicily and there were many street shots I took with this in mind… more than cables, the balcony supports, iron tracery of the balusters. washing and fabric sunshades flapping across the street were quite memorable, amongst every other thing you could imagine and not on or hung from the balconies!

  2. I like the diversity in the shots – old, new, busy, quiet, etc. Interesting to look at (and admire!) and wish I was in Tokyo too!

    1. Thanks, Marion, had a great Saturday exploring Tokyo. Visit if you have the opportunity, this city is awesome! Tomorrow is travel day back to Nuremberg! Have a nice weekend! Marcus

  3. Another fantastic set of photos – I can feel the athmosphere and am very jealous… Our cruise would have gone there, too, and we`re still hoping to go another time and see all those places…

  4. Beautiful Marcus, I think you should just keep travelling around the world showing us your beautiful photos. The photos show a very human side to a large city…..love them. Safe travels, Lynne 🙂

    1. Thanks, Lynne. I would love to keep traveling and show you the world, but I think that wouldn’t pay the bills 😉 ! But it was an exceptional and memorable trip and I’m glad I got to do this 🙂 ! Marcus

      1. Lol, so true, the bill have to be paid 🙂 But you have had a wonderful experience and thank you for sharing it with us all 🙂

      1. I always enjoy looking at your clicks! …and also your suggestions on photography! 🙂

  5. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed these shots, Marcus — I LOVED THEM. I really did! Your post is a wonderful microcosm of all things Tokyo, from the traditional garb at the temple to the pet owl and the blue-green hair. Thank you for letting us tag along.

  6. I love your street shots Marcus. The contrast between the old and new and traditional and contemporary in Tokyo is amazing, isn’t it ? The prize for one category, not sure what to call it, maybe – CHE?! Is the one with the owl. I saw a young woman in Buenos Aires taking a small iguana for a walk on a leash once. I like the shopkeeper watching the sumo shot a lot too. Keep them coming, Marcus. Louise
