My first Lensbaby photograph

Winter Blossom
Winter Blossom | Nuremberg | 2018

If your loved ones and friends know that you are a passionate photographer, finding birthday presents isn’t all that difficult.

The significant other got me a Lensbaby Trio 28mm f/3.5 lens, that has a rotating head so I get three Lensbaby effects in one lens: Twist, Velvet and Sweet. I wanted the lens badly as I was really inspired by fellow blogger Kaya and her superb collection of Lensbaby photos.

Needless to say I screwed it right on my PEN-F and went outside where I snapped this image (jpg out of camera – no treatment) of our blossoming winter bush against sky and a bare birch tree. I love the bokeh of the lens and really look forward taking the creative possibilities of my new Lensbaby to the Streets of Nuremberg.

The Big Girl and the Big Boy combined forces and gave me an awesome coffee table book called “Bystander”, where editor Colin Westerbeck and famous Street Photographer Joel Meyerowitz document the history of Street Photography from its beginnings until today on almost 400 pages, with a well curated assortment of photographs of all the greats of the genre. This book is a treasure!

My dad gave me a beautiful book on Chinese Street Photographer Feng Li,  the “White Night”, a great documentary on life in China.

I also got photographers gloves where you can actually stick thumb an index finger through the foldable tips of the glove (thanks to fellow blogger Tim for the tip).

And another book I read about on the web and put on my wishlist “One Face, Fifty Ways”, ideas for portraits by model Imogen Dyer and photographer Mark Wilkinson.

I’m blessed with awesome people around me, not only because I got all those nice presents.

Have a great Saturday!

Marcus

  1. Looking forward to seeing how your lensbaby works with street photography. I have the Twist 60 and the Sweet 50 and although they take some taming, they’re worth the work. If you’re not familiar, have a look for Hengki Lee for some very edgy lensbaby work.

  2. Happy Belated Birthday Marcus! I’ve heard wonderful things about Lensbaby’s. This shot has me knowing what lens I want next. 😉

  3. Happy belated birthday to you. What an awesome birthday gift, I am sure you will take so much joy out of it. Lensbaby is the lens I have my eye on since quite a while. You just inspired me to have friends and family contribute for this lens for my birthday, though it is far until June, but better than gifts I really don’t know what to do with them. Thank you, enjoy your new lens live!!

  4. Happy belated birthday. I just looked up the Lensbaby Trio, didn’t you just luck out? I love the bokeh in your picture. I bet you are going to have a lot of fun testing these out.
I bought a book of unusual things to see in Ontario and can’t wait for the snow to disappear so I can visit them. Photography is so exciting! Enjoy your new toys!

    1. Thanks so much for your wished and kind words, Rebel Girl, much appreciated! I bet there is so much to see and photograph in Ontario. So let’s have fun in 2018 🙂 ! Marcus

  5. Herzlichen Glückwunsch nachträglich! And lots of thanks for the (implicit) information that there (probably) was a re-edition of ‘Bystander’. I had this book on the list for a while but since it was out of print it always seemed a bit too pricey 🙂

  6. I hope you had a lovely Birthday Marcus! That Lensbaby seems so interesting, I have never heard of them before but now I am intrigued and will be doing my research on them! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks for your kind words, Adell, this is so much appreciated! I had indeed a fabulous birthday! The Lensbaby is so much fun for some creative photography! Have a great Sunday! Marcus

  7. Well a happy though belated birthday wish to you. I appears that you have had a great birthday. I’ll have to look up the books.
I hope your weekend is going well.

      1. You’re welcome Marcus.
The regional library system had the “Bystandard” book. I’ll get it next week. I’m looking forward to it. The Feng Li book does not seem to be available in the U.S. Amazon does not have it. It could be a licensing issue.

  8. Marcus, Happy Birthday! You got from your significant one a fabulous gift. Lensbaby Trio is an amazing invention. Lensbaby has a slogan ” See the world in a different way” and you are on a very interesting photographic journey. I love your photograph taken with your Lensbaby. It’s beautiful.

    1. Thank you so much for your wishes, Kaya, it means so much. You are the one who inspired me to look into Lensbaby with you beautiful photographs. Thanks also for this! Have a blessed Sunday! Marcus

  9. A belated Happy Birthday and thank you for yet another interesting post! I’m glad to see that other photographers experiment with Lensbaby photography. I’ve been a fan for several years, now. Started out with the Composer (the old one, with aperture rings and creative aperture rings), and then, several years later, the Velvet. Some people make fun of my Lensbaby, but I love this lens. I think it’s great for experimenting and trying out new things. Also, I’m glad that you like your gloves, too. Got mine a few years ago, also as a bday present :-). They come in handy! I’ll check out the “One Face, Fifty Ways” book, sound interesting. Thank you again for sharing!

    1. Thanks for your kind wishes, Alina, and for sharing your thoughts on Lensbaby. Glad you found the tip with the book useful. It is great and I’m really looking forward to trying out some of the portrait tips. Have a great Sunday! Marcus

      1. That’s great to hear! I will be returning to Berlin on March 30th for 3 weeks… Let’s plan on meeting up sometime! PM me and we can coordinate if you will be around during that period.

        Best,
        Gustavo
