Weekly Photo Challenge: Growth

Black Amaryllis

No, you don’t have to worry about my mental well being, with all the high contrast monochrome photographs I’m posting lately. I’m perfectly fine and there is plenty of sunshine in my heart. It’s just that I more drawn to black & white work these days.

So I’m using the first “Weekly Photo Challenge” of 2018 to add some more monochrome images to this blog. The title is “growth“. The only things that are growing these days in our house are the tulips I got from my wife as birthday flowers, and the Amaryllis she planted in December and that are growing splendidly.

As with my limited time I didn’t get into town for some street photography, I did a little setup on our living room table, using a black cardboard as background, positioning flowers in front of it and using a movable desk lamp to shed some direct lights on the flowers. Then I snapped away with my PEN-F and my 14-150 F/4-5.6 zoom, shooting at 1/100 sec, f/5.6 and ISO 200.  Easy setup, great results. Monochrome conversion done in Lightroom Classic CC. For the rest of the photos continue after the jump….

This easy setup can be recreated by everyone at home. You can also use any camera/lens combo or your smartphone camera. You are invite to post a link to your results in the comment section.

Have a great week!

  1. Very nice Marcus, love the first one, works great in b&w…… I love b&w, a medium I use a lot of, course its not so good for photographing stain glass windows 🙂 Lynne

  2. It didn’t occur to me to worry about your mental health on account of your recent shift to BW, Marcus — the joy and curiosity you feel for your subjects is evident even without a stitch of color. I love the ethereal quality of the photos in this set. Their translucency hints at their fragility and impermanence. Beautiful work!

      1. Maybe you love my comments because they’re from the heart — and from someone who greatly admires your work? 🙂

  3. I appreciate your tips, Marcus! I’m the lazy sort, not a planner or a techie when it comes to photos. But when I see photos like this, I feel inspired to try – one day when I have more time… 😉 My favorite is the first shot, it is enticing and elegant!

  4. Nice! Myself, I’m not into flowers, I’d rather have photo gear, lol! but I love tulips.

Love the mood. Beautiful b&w flower photography! Makes one stop and really look.

    Thanks for sharing!

  5. Now who says that you get away with excuse for not having time and subject. Quite resourceful you are, Marcus. I love B&W pictures. My personal choice of subject for these pictures i portraits. somehow monochrome brings alive emotions.
