My New York City Eye Opener

Eye Opener
Eye Opener | New York City | 2018

This is my New York City eye-opener from this morning, in the truest sense of the word. When I opened my eyes at 6:05am this morning, this is what I saw from my pillow. Our hotel room has floor to roof glass windows, and sure we slept with the curtains open, with the view of the downtown Manhattan skyline. I grabbed my E-M1 and squeezed off a shot through our windows at 1/5 sec, f/4 and ISO 200, to capture the magic of the pre-sunrise blue hour.

The debate was not really a debate. We threw some clothes on and took the stairs from the 12th floor (where our room is) to the rooftop on the 19th floor of our hotel in the Meetpacking District directly above the Highline Park. In the midst of a freezing morning (it was 32F / 0C) we enjoyed, all by ourselves, a magic Manhattan sunrise.

The rooftop has also a glass wall, in which I captured the reflections of the sunrise behind the midtown skyline (behind us) and the downtown skyline with the new World Trade Center. No double exposure, a single shot. 1/320 sec @ f/7.1 and ISO 200. Lens was the 12-100mm F/4 I brought along with my OM-D E-M1.

I took this panorama with my iPhone from the roof, this is practically the same view we enjoy from our room, only without any window reflections. Isn’t this a million dollar view? Life is good! Today we head downtown to World Trade Center and the 9/11 memorial and museum.

Have a great Monday!

Marcus

  1. Good capture Marcus. Not sure what it is, but some of the best sunrises I have seen have been from a hotel/apartment window in a city. Could be the heat island effect or the contrast of sun beams and buildings. Allan

    1. Thanks, Amy, sorry for not responding earlier. We had a totally amazing week and time was much too precious to spend it in front of the computer. And now the office is killing me. Life…..hope you’re having a great week! Marcus

      1. Much better to see the world than to sit in front of the computer. 🙂 I’m glad you all had an amazing time. Sorry that the office catch up is brutal! Winter is trying to maintain her grip here, but I can see the rays of sunshine 😉

    1. Thanks, Kristin, appreciate your kind words so much. Life is good indeed! You can take great pictures with every camera. There is also a lot of practice behind to read the light and know how to work the camera in all situations… I need to do my visual push-ups every day ;-). Marcus

  2. BTW the High Line has some great shots early in the morning toward the Hudson River. The walkway along the Hudson is also great. The sun seems almost to come up the Hudson from the ocean.

    1. On our last morning we did the early morning High Line walk. It seems, the whole Hudson river shoreline is a single big construction, new towers are growing like tulips in spring…

  3. WOW! Excited to see what else lies ahead for you while in NYC! Did you say where you were staying? Maybe you won’t for privacy reasons, I’m just curious…

    1. Thanks, Katie, we had a splendid week in the Big Apple. Time was too precious to spend in front of the laptop. Now I just need time to process my images and write blogposts, but they are coming up. We were staying in “The Standard Highline” on Washington Street in the Meatpacking District. Marcus

  4. Is that a million-dollar view? No. It’s *priceless,* Marcus! Gorgeous images — what a great start to your trip.

    1. Thanks, Heide, as always. Sorry for replying so late, time in NYC was too precious to spend in front of a LCD screen 😉 and now the job that pays the bills has me in its fangs again….life…more is coming up! Hope you are having a great week! Marcus

      1. There are no apologies needed, Marcus — I understand only too well the preciousness of time on the road, and also the fangs of the day job. That’s part of the reason I *so* appreciate your posts and correspondence here. Your time is valuable, so it’s all the more meaningful when we do get to interact. But I look forward to seeing more about your adventures! Cheers to you!

  5. I have no words for ‘rooftop reflections. I believe, honestly that that may be the most ingenious photography I ever saw in my life! I know 18 years! I hope that makes you happy because, it absolutely made my day! This is breathtaking!

      1. You are most welcome, Marcus!! I am happy it encouraged you. You absolutely deserved it. It was breathtaking!! God bless! 🙂
