NYC Experience – Night in the Station

Nights can be creepy in the New York City Subway system. Once in a while, another one bites the dust. For the story behind continue after the jump…

Couldn’t help writing this lurid entry to the latest episode of my NYC experience, considering the croc coming out of the sewer in the 14th Street / 8th Avenue subway station. I vaguely remember having seen a horror movie about a monster alligator in the sewer system of the Big Apple. But in fact, using the New York subway is easy, safe, and simply the best way to move around the city.

We bought the 7-day Metro Card for 32 USD, which gave us unlimited rides on the subway (buses are also included, but we never used then). This is simply the most economic way traveling around the city, aside from walking maybe.

But to solve the riddle about the riddle about the croc, it is part of an art installation that graces the 14th St. / 8 Av. station. New York artist Tom Otterness was commissioned by the MTA for a political cartoon-inspired project called “Life Underground” as part of the renovation of the station beginning of the 2000’s. There are around 130 sculptures hidden in nooks and crannies all over the station. Definitely worth exploring a bit, if you are in the area.

14th St. / 8th Av. was our “home station”, as it was just three blocks away from our hotel.

The weekend here in Nuremberg looks promising, we should get great weather and our local soccer team is playing for promotion into the Bundesliga, our top level German soccer league. Then I’m looking ahead to another short week, as coming Thursday is another public holiday in my country.

Wish you all a great and sunny weekend!
