It is really fun, being home all December (which hasn’t happened the past 5 years) and having time to explore the various Christmas markets of our area, enjoy time with friends and family and really get into the holiday spirit. Together with good friends, The Significant Other and myself today traveled to Abensberg (a small town about 100km south of Nuremberg) to visit a special Christmas market.

The Christmas market is situated on the premises of a brewery, that is, architectural speaking, a bit special. Highlight is a tower, 34.19 meter high and originally conceived and planned by famous Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who died during the tower’s planning phase in 2000. After Hundertwasser’s death, the building was completed by the architect Peter Pelikan and opened to the public in 2010. The tower and the nearby KunstHaus Abensberg both feature the play- and colorful architecture that made Hunderwasser famous.

Since 2010 a Christmas market takes place around the area of the KunstHaus (ArtHouse) and the tower. I brought the Olympus OM-D E-M1X and the mZuiko 12-100 F/4 Pro Zoom. Strolling between the stalls, I had some fun playing with depth of field and long exposures, as well as shooting some street photography.

The Tower can be climbed as part of a brewery tour. The KunstHaus, designed by architect and Hundertwasser student Peter Pelikan, is the latest attraction in the “beer art town” of Abensberg and, with its extremely inclined tower a real eye-catcher.

It was really a cool outing on a special Christmas market, combining a fun trip with friends and some photography. And a great start into a 16 day Christmas break, that The Significant Other and I are really looking forward to. Time to rest and recharge the batteries.

Wish you a great Saturday

Marcus
