The Fun is Over

I’m welcoming myself back to my own blog, after a small summer break I took after returning to Germany from our family vacation trip through the Pacific Northwest. I guess everyone needs a timeout once in a while. The transition from a splendid three weeks off work back to the job that pays the bills was just too hard, and in the evenings I was just too tired to get in front of my computer to blog.

But there is plenty to do photographically, I still need to edit and post-process most of my images from our trip, write the remaining “PNW Explored”posts about the Oregon High Desert, our trips up the volcanos Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens,  and to wrap it up, a visit to the fascinating Museum of Flight at Boeing Field in Seattle, just hours before we boarded the flight back to Germany.

I dearly need to clean my camera equipment, the dust and dirt really took its toll after three weeks on the road.

And I really have to catch up with all the comments on this blog I haven’t answered, plus check out all the blogs I follow and I haven’t visited in the past weeks.

The summer fun is over, now it’s back to work!

The Streets of Nuremberg are back in business 😉

PNW Explored – The Oregon Coast

After our adventures on the Olympic Peninsula we crossed the mouth of the mighty Columbia River into Oregon via the Astoria Megler Bridge (have done a post about it more than a year ago, which you can read here). While new for the family, this brought me back into familiar territory, as I have visited the Oregon coast numerous times while working my project in Portland. PNW Explored – Olympic Peninsula

Our summer tour through the Pacific Northwest continued with a trip to the Olympic Peninsula, west of Seattle. We have set up camp for two nights in a Bed&Breakfast in Port Townsend, from where we visit the mountainous part of Olympic National Park, then headed to the West for a night in Kalaloch at the Lodge, for a stunning Pacific Ocean sunset and trips to the only rainforests of the northern hemisphere. I do have deep respect for people doing Yoga, something that is on my bucket list but that I have not accomplished yet (although some Portland based work colleagues try to talk me into it).

But that what I saw on Washington’s Lake Crescent the other day is definitely something out of the realm of my possibilities.

A girl doing a headstand on a stand-up paddle board. On a lake. Like with moving water. Totally insane.

“Instant Inspirations” is my series for you if you look for something to overcome “Photographer’s Block”  or simply want to shoot something that you have never tried, or at least not recently. Episode 26 is about shooting an optical illusion.

The shot above was taken with my Olympus PEN-F and the mZuiko 40-150mm F/2.8. Image specs are 1/250 sec @ f/6,3 and ISO 200, with 150mm focal length (300mm full frame equivalent).

What do you see? A ship, crossing the sky like an airplane? Let me tell you, there are no flying ships in the skies above Washington State, even with innovative aircraft manufactures like Boeing in the area. But why is there a mountain, the clouds above, and then a ship?

I took this photo up on Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park. It shows the Juan de Fuca Strait below (the narrows between Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island), the sea fog near the shore and a some kind of freighter behind.

It is not always as it seems. Especially visually. Grab you camera, go out and look to capture an optical illusion. Please share a link to your results in the comments section.

Continuing with our explorations of the Pacific Northwest, we left Seattle early in the morning for a day trip to Mt. Rainier National Park, which is a good two and a half hour drive via Enumclaw and Greenwater. PNW Explored – San Juan Whale watching

We started our summer adventure into the Pacific Northwest with a maritime adventure, a whale watching tour out of Anacortes on Fidalgo Island, about 90 minutes by car north of Seattle. I have already done this tour over Memorial Day weekend (read the post here), and already back then I had decided to bring the family during summer vacation. The whale watch tour starting at 4pm in the afternoon was a four and a half hour trip on a larger boat. Obviously, nothing ever is promised when viewing wildlife (we learned this during many hours driving through the African bush without seeing as much as a hair of an animal). Dreams come True

Last night, Big Girl has made one of her dreams come true. As kid, as probably all girls do, she wanted to be a Ballerina, but for one reason or the other, she never made it to join a ballet group. As teenager, she watched all episodes of the Australian ballet TV series “Dance Academy”, sad she missed the opportunity and stating that she’ll never be a dancer. Then, at the turn of being 20, she signed up for ballet classes at our local adult evening school, together with a friend.

And last night, after a nearly a year of hard work and endless rehearsals, she took to the stage in a production of Romeo and Juliet, all organized and played by the local adult evening school, featuring their ballet classes for adults, teens and children. Big Girl’s group played three supporting roles, first peasant ladies, then maids, and finally some court ladies of Juliet.

Never give up

There were too many clouds in the southern sky. We were enjoying a great dinner with friends and family out on the patio on a warm summer night. Everyone was exited to see the total lunar eclipse. At 22:30, as announced, the International Space Station ISS appeared as a brightly glowing spot out of the North, passing directly overhead before vanishing behind the clouds. We almost gave up hope. But then, all of a sudden, the sky cleared and we had a perfect view of the eclipse. By the time I grabbed the tripod and my Oly, walked a few hundred yards to an open field and set up shop, the moon was already starting to move out of the Earth’s shadow.

The photo was taken with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the 40-150 F/2.8 Pro Zoom with the MC 14 converter attached, giving me a 210mm focal length (equals 420mm in full frame). Image specs are 1/8 sec @ f/4 and ISO 1600. Cropped, curve adjustments and slight sharpening of the RAW was done in Lightroom Classic CC.

Well, to be correct, last evening was not all that fair, but rather rainy. The summer is taking break in Nuremberg, before we are supposed to get another heat wave starting tomorrow. Still, we went to our local little summer fair, and I brought my (in this combination weatherproof) Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the mZuiko 12-100mm F/4 for some shooting in the blue hour. Fairgrounds are great places to snap away, colorful and full of happy people. The person behind the camera can shoot fairly inconspicuous.
