Serenity in Shades of Gray

Pine Tree Silhouettes
Coastal Pines | Liguria | 2026

There’s something truly special about black and white photography. For me, it’s more than just removing color; it’s about stripping away distractions and getting right to the heart of what makes an image compelling. It’s about reducing the scene to its purest form: composition. Serenity in Shades of Gray.

Take this shot, for instance, captured in the Ligurian Apennines, northwest of Genoa. The moment I saw these majestic trees silhouetted against the misty mountains, I knew it had to be black and white. The layers of hills fading into the distance, the stark outlines of the pines – it all just sings in monochrome.

When I shoot in black and white, the entire process becomes a tranquil enjoyment. It forces me to see shapes, lines, and textures in a different way. The absence of color simplifies everything, allowing the eye to focus solely on the interplay of light and shadow, and the arrangement of elements within the frame. It’s photography reduced to a minimum, and in that simplicity, I find immense satisfaction.

This image, with its quiet strength and layered depth, perfectly embodies that feeling for me. It’s a reminder that sometimes, less truly is more, and that beauty can be found in the most understated of palettes.

What are your thoughts on black and white photography? Do you find it as calming and focused as I do? Let me know in the comments below!

Silhouettes of a photographing couple at a colorful ocean beach

I like to give me those little photographic self assignments, to keep my creative juices flowing. Like when I was enjoying a Pacific sunset at Oregon’s Cannon Beach the other day. When I was capturing beach emotions.

Words of Wisdom

Photograph of a couple standing in front of an art installation providing life advice
Life Advice |  1/25 sec – f/4 – ISO 200 – 23 mm

I was kind of missing in action the past week, I have to admit, and this due to multiple reasons. First of all plenty of work for the job that pays the bills. Plus, I was severely impacted by a heavy case of jet lag during my first days in Portland. And this past weekend I was out and about in the city, preferring to roam the streets of Rose City with my camera doing some photography, rather than sitting in front of the MacBook and do blogging. Although I must admit I carried my little laptop with me in my backpack. I had some romanticized aspirations of doing some writing while resting in one of Portland’s many craft coffee shops. But with only two free days available, I ended up running around and shooting the whole time, despite frequent downpours that hit the Pacific Northwest over the weekend. Generations | Camogli | 2001

The magic of photographic archives is that whenever you like you can turn on the “wayback machine”. Today I was looking back into the very beginnings of my digital photography. Searching for a complete different photograph, I stumbled across this shot from December 30th 2001. The camera was a Sony Cybershot DSC 1. We just had moved to Italy that year. When friends from Nuremberg visited us in Genoa we visited the little coastal town of Camogli. The three little girls in this image are now grown women of almost 20 years. We adults have a few wrinkles more. And we all are still friends. Live is changing, but life is also good. Yes, we should capture all those moments in our hearts. But photography helps to preserve those hidden little treasures that put a smile on our faces when we look at them and remember……

Drinks before the Show | Hamburg | 2016

Today we went to see the Musical “The Lion King” in Hamburg. Visually it was an awesome show, probably the best I’ve ever seen, but I felt the singers couldn’t quite match it. Still a great evening.

The pic above I snapped with my iPhone in on of the bars in the lobby of the theater.

Have a great weekend!
