Sure enough we spend ample time at the beach, during our Ligurian vacation. And this is always a good opportunity to put my rugged Olympus TG-4 camera to action. Because who says you can shoot street photography only on terra firma? Street? Beach! Sea!
Sure enough, there is a lot of hit and miss when taking the camera into the water. Because you simply don’t see much on the backside LCD screen of the TG-4, especially when shooting into the bright sunlight. But I was visually attracted to the sparkling water, the backlit parasols and the bathers enjoying some cooling in the Mediterranean at the beach of colorful Laigueglia. I cranked up the aperture in order to capture some starbursts from the sun’s reflection. I’m not fully happy with the results. I’m not sure whether this is because of the camera’s optics (the lens was covered with salt water and not dry), or because the reflections in the moving water where just to big and bright.
Still, I love how those street/beach photographs came out, capturing the essence of Italian beach life on a relaxed summer Friday afternoon. I always intended to convert the RAW’s into an Ansel Adams like (that’s what this specific of my Lightroom presets is called) high contrast monochrome image, as colors against the sun would have been mute anyway.
I took a photo of the same scene in the morning, when the sun came from behind and illuminated the colorful beachfront buildings of Laigueglia.
