Alternative Xmas Market

Finally Friday, with both The Significant Other and myself having had a rough week from the jobs that pay the bills. Normally, this time of the year, we would head out to our local christmas market for fried sausages and some mulled wine to wind down and prepare for the weekend. Only that the Covid-lockdown has shut the door on all public events this December.

So I decided to have an alternative xmas market, right in our back yard, just for the family. I barbecued Franconian sausages, The Wife made the dough for some bread on sticks we fried above the fire bowl. Add some hot mulled wine and a Spotify christmas music list playing from a mobile speaker. The recent snow in the garden provided the perfect backdrop. And so we had our perfect start into the weekend anyway.

Season of Lights

When Friday night the wheels of my KLM flight from Manchester via Amsterdam back to Nuremberg kissed the asphalt of the runway of my hometown’s airport, another crazy work week came to an end. And, fingers crossed, this should have been the last air travel of this year. Coincidentally, Friday night this year’s Christmas season kicked off with the grand opening of Nuremberg’s famous Christkindlesmarkt. While I arrived much too late to make it to the opening ceremony last night, this evening I grabbed my camera and the Significant Other and headed to one of the many local Christmas markets for our start into the Season of Lights.

Walking under the Stars

Finally we got away, at least for an evening. The Significant Other and I headed to nearby historic town of Schwäbisch Hall to spend the Friday evening under the stars. It was a cold but clear night, and everybody had a good time. And yes, I finally got the Bratwurst that I was longing for all week.

I brought the OM-D E-M1 with the 12-100 F/4. Somehow, this festive season, I’m very much into black and white (not that I’m in a dark mood). And the nightly cities with their bright festive illuminations provide a good background for some high contrast monochrome shooting. Obviously, you need to work with high ISO and slower shutter speeds. But a bit of grain and slightly blurred (as moving) people doesn’t hurt in these kind of photography, sometimes even add to the atmosphere.

But don’t worry, colorful Christmas photos are on the way, these are just a few quick results from last night. Don’t really have time to work on the images, as we have a totally busy weekend ahead with shopping, meeting friends, birthdays, concerts and a Christmas party. And maybe the one or other snapshot 😉

Yesterday, a first blanket of snow covered our city, gone again today. But a clear sign of the coming winter, and just in time to the starting festive season.

Today is the traditional opening of Nuremberg’s famous christmas market, or Christkindlesmarkt, as it is called by the locals. It takes place in the weeks leading up to Christmas (Adventszeit) on the main market square in front of the famous Frauenkirche (built in the 14th century), the wooden stalls covered by roofs of red and white cloths.

While today it is pouring down once more, yesterday was a glorious December Saturday. Although we are far from having any snow (and the temperatures felt more like spring) it was still a special atmosphere on Nuremberg’s famous Christmas Market, the “Christkindlesmarkt” as it is called locally. It takes place in the four weeks leading up to Christmas (Adventszeit) on the main Market Square in front of the famous Frauenkirche (built in the 14th century). StoNur on the Road – Innsbruck Christmas Markets

Last week we travelled to Innsbruck, Austria to spend the weekend in the beautiful mountain chalet of two friends (A&O, if you are reading this – thanks so much again for the great time). Besides great talks, food and lots of relax we drove down to the historic city center of Innsbruck to visit the Christmas Markets in the Old Town and on the banks of the Inn river.
