The weekend is finally here, and with it a new episode of my “Instant Inspirations”. If you feel you suffer from “Photographer’s Block” or simply want to shoot something that you have never tried or at least not recently, then this series is for you. My inspiration for you in episode 11 is to try a change of perspective. In my very first episode of “Instant Inspirations” I talked about “getting down low”. Today’s post is about looking down, looking up and looking outside in. To see my other change of perspective photographs continue reading after the jump….
The introductory photo to this post is my example for looking down. I took this a few years back in the Vatican Museum and it shows the famous double helix spiral staircase designed by Donate Bramante and built in 1505, a fine example of Renaissance architecture. Looking down can provide for great and unusual perspectives. Another possibility to look down is shooting through puddles, something I described in Episode 5.
The opposite is looking up. The photo below I took while strolling through the Centro Storico, the Old Town of Genoa in Italy. It is one of the oldest medieval historic city centers in Europe. The multi story town houses from the 14th century tower over a maze of narrow alleyways. They provide a good opportunity to not only look for details in the alleys on ground level, but also interesting perspectives looking up.
Another change of perspective is to shoot outside in. When a the beach, the typical photos are taken on the beach and show the water or are sideways photos that show the water, the beach and some inland scenery. So why not take the unusual angle and shoot the beach, the beachcombers and the building from inside the water? Of course, you need to have a water protected camera (for this photo below I took my Olympus Tough TG-4 into the sea).
So if you feel inspired to give your photography a change of perspective take your camera and head out, avoiding the usual “straight from the eye” shots and look for some unusual angles. You are invited to ping back to this post and show your results by linking to your photos in the comment section below.
Have a great weekend!
Marcus
