Frequent readers of this blog know that, once in a while, I like to participate in photo challenges on Word Press, albeit less frequently lately due to the discontinuation  of the WPC from “There Daily Post”. And typically I try to enter a street style photograph into the challenge, that, depending on the prompt, is sometimes more and sometimes less difficult. Happy 3rd Birthday, Streets of Nuremberg

This day three years ago I started the “Streets of Nuremberg”. What a journey it has been.  And what better way to celebrate the blogaversary as with two photographs of the city that gives this blog its name (also supposed to be a teaser about an upcoming post from Thursday night’s winter walk through the snow covered Old Town).

Aside from being my own creative outlet  (“phototherapy” is a great way to compensate the pressures from the job that pays the bills), the real fun part is to connect with different people from all over the planet (this blog is read in 146 countries and counting…). So to all my readers, and especially to the many ones with whom virtual and real friendships have started, a heartfelt “Thank You” for being part of my fun ride! And to many more happy years of blogging to come!

The photographs were taken with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the mZuiko 12-100mm F/4 and a tripod. A post with more images and all the photographic challenges on that icy night is coming up.

Travel Day (16)

Today it was finally travel day again, my first out-of-country business trip of the year. Just a one day trip from Nuremberg to Zurich. I left 5:15 to drive to the airport for the 7am flight to ZRH, needing the extra time due to the couple of inches of snow on the ground, as it had continued to snow throughout the night (last night I took camera and tripod to town for some awesome shooting of the snow-covered Old Town and the Imperial Castle – post coming up). Just in case you wonder if you missed the last 5553 posts about Friday night’s Instawalk at Nuremberg’s Albrecht Dürer Airport (NUE), don’t worry, there was only episode 1 I posted yesterday. But I decided on the special numbering to celebrate 5555 followers for this blog. This morning, the “Streets of Nuremberg” passed the mark that I wouldn’t even remotely have considered reaching one day. Thanks to everyone regularly reading about my photographic musings, this is so much appreciated.

So this is the second post with some shots I took during the walk with 15 fellow Nuremberg Instagramers trough the airport’s car parks, organized by the admins  @igers_nuernberg  and properly authorized by the Airport press department. Going for a walk

Tomorrow night I’ll go for a walk. I’ll join my very first Instagram walk. While this blog is my main outlet for my street- and travel photography, I also have two Instagram accounts where I occasionally post my images: @streetsofnuremberg (street) and @travimago (travel).

Nuremberg has a very active Instagram scene, I discovered about a year ago when I ventured into an excellent Instagram photo exhibition curated and organized by the city marketing department (that is also very active on IG). I joined a guided tour through the exhibit moderated by one of the leading local Instagramers. I was surprised to learn there is a lot of organized activities in the community, among those the IG walks, that also offer opportunities to get access to places where you can’t normally shoot yourself. These days it is the job that pays the bills that prohibits me to pick up the camera and head into town. Especially now, that the gruesome weather of the past days has given way to calm winter weather.

But it is also the same job that comes with some benefits, like traveling to places around the globe. And while those business trips for the most part are limited to seeing airport, office and hotel, sometimes arises the opportunity to sneak away for an hour or two to catch some more touristic glimpses of those fascinating places. I can see clearly now…

…the rain has come. I know, the song by Jimmy Cliff has a slightly different title. But the snow on the Streets of Nuremberg has been replaced by torrential rain. It’s gruesome outside. The maximum you can do as street photographer is going for some puddle shooting. And then finding a coffee shop for some hot Espresso.

The photograph was taken with the Ricoh GR II, specs are 1/125 sec @ F/5 and ISO 1600.

Stay Underground

Taking the camera and shooting underground is always a good option when the weather is bad on the surface. Commuters are usually too much in a hurry to notice the inconspicuous standing street photographer, especially when he shoots with a small camera like the Olympus PEN-F with the attached 17mm F/1.8 prime lens. This photo I took crouched down, two catch the pigeon trying to beat the people exiting the train to the escalator (…just joking).

While the streets of Nuremberg are graced only by a touch of snow, Southern Bavaria and the Alps are hit by the worst winter weather in a decade. Downtown Munich (just 90 miles south) sports a whopping 2-3 feet of snow, and in the mountains many villages are cut-off from the rest of the world buried under up to 9 feet of snow. It will continue the snow and there is significant danger for people and buildings. Almost all small roads and train lines are interrupted. The winter weather is forecasted to continue well into next week. I cancelled the business day trip to Munich scheduled for today to avoid having to drive into the chaos.

I really hope everybody down south stays safe.

Play with perspective

Another fun thing to do when composing photographs is to play with perspective, something that works just as well when doing street photography.

Look at the guy I caught deep in thoughts (or snoozing) on a subway ride. He is holding his cellphone in his right hand. Only that it seems like the hand holding the phone is coming out of the arm of the person sitting in the background, rather than is own arm.

The human eye tends to follow lines. And the hand and the arm behind form an almost natural looking line, and, together with the hunched over subway rider, forms a full circle, adding a certain harmony to the composition.

The eye of a casual observer, even if subconsciously, catches the anomaly and will try to solve the riddle. This little play with perspective adds an additional interest to the photograph. And lets the observer’s eye remain a second or two longer on our image. Which is what we want as photographers.
