Weekly Photo Challenge: Transformation

Transformation is something affecting all of us constantly. It is also the title of the Weekly Photo Challenge  Jen H. from Word Press’ “The Daily Post” has given us for this week. Transformation is very visible outside our windows here in Germany, as the strong autumn storms are blowing the last leaves from the trees and nature readies itself for another winter.  Managing transformation processes is also an integral part of my professional life and the job that pays the bills.

My take on the challenge this week is the decay of man made structures as they are slowly recaptured by nature and transformed to rubble and dust.

Like the wooden buildings of the diamond ghost town Kolmanskoop. slowly but steadily blown to pieces by the high winds of the Namib Desert or swallowed up by the passing dunes. Or like the iron remnants of the more than one hundred years old sailing vessel “Peter Iredale” on the Oregon coast, that are gradually being dissolved by microorganisms and through the forces of the great Pacific Ocean.

To all my American friends I wish a very happy and peaceful Thanksgiving!

Be creative today

It’s the start of of a new week, albeit a short one here in Germany, as we’re looking forward to two bank holidays on Tuesday and Wednesday, to which I’ll be adding two days of much needed vacation. Throw in Halloween tomorrow, and there will be plenty of opportunity for photography the next days.

November is coming up, in Central Europe commonly dubbed as the most dreary, grey and dullest month of the year. To bridge the time until the start of the festive season, why don’t you take on some creative projects during November, whether it is taking your camera and go shooting some things you haven’t before (find ideas in my Instant Inspiration series in my Learning Center), improve your post processing skills, compile a photo book of your work, or try something completely different like sketching or sculpturing. Brighten up your November by doing something creative.

Top of the Food Chain

I was waiting on the opposite side of W. Burnside Street in Portland for a pedestrian to pass in front of this advertisement of a Pizza Parlor. As Burnside is a street with heavy traffic, the problem was to catch a subject in perfect stride in front of the sign just as there was a gap in the passing cars. In the course of 10 minutes I snapped three photos, of which I liked this one the best, as the guy (who was in reality heading to Powell’s books that is just across the street) was in a perfect stride, his legs mimicking the triangle of the pizza slice. I was fine with the shutter speed of 1/80 sec which gave me a slight blur on the subject (you really need about 1/125 to freeze a moving person). I would be interested in your opinion whether you would have preferred the subject to be pin sharp. Let me know in the comment section.

Image specs are 1/80 sec @ f/5.6 and ISO 500. Taken with the Olympus PEN-F and and the mZuiko 14-150mm F/4-5.6 travel zoom.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Rounded

Also for this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge “Rounded” I have just the right  two street photography images, both from the streets of Portland and already featured in my post “Keep Portland Weird“.

Both photos were taken with my Ricoh GR II , image details are 1/40 sec @ f/2.8 and ISO 200 on the above shot and  1/45 sec @ f/2.8 and ISO 100 on the second image. As usual I kept the Ricoh in P-mode, so I could focus on getting the photo and less about worrying to get the settings right. These street moments happen only for an instance, you need to be ready for it, you don’t have the time to set up like for stationary landscapes or architecture. So “P” prepared 😉 and shoot in P-mode.

For me it is Travel Day again, I’m leaving the Rose City to head home to the Streets of Nuremberg via Amsterdam, hoping for another Polar Light Show while crossing the Northern Atlantic tonight.

From the Streets of Portland into the Cloud

After pouring rain for most of the weekend, the Oregonian liquid sunshine turned into some real one on Sunday, so I took my Olympus PEN-F and headed into downtown for some late afternoon street shooting (and a visit to the photography book section of Powell’s City of Books).

Last week Adobe released a new version of its mobile Lightroom apps as well as a rebranded update of the Lightroom desktop version. While using the rainy part of the weekend to try to make some sense out of it, I now needed some fresh street shots on my SD card for some real life testing ( I have never used previous versions of Lightroom Mobile before). Oregon International Air Show (and how I photographed it)

Yesterday I visited the Oregon International Airshow at Hillsboro Airport near Portland. As an airplane nut and former certified pilot I just had to take the opportunity once I found out the event was on during my free weekend in the Pacific Northwest. And sure I wanted to take many photos, although being limited to my Olympus PEN-F and my mZuiko 14-150mm F4-5.6 Travel Zoom. Street ? Beach !

Who says Street Photography can only be done in the streets? Check out these photos from Manzanita Beach at the Oregon coast that I took during my coastal road trip last weekend.

Obviously, beach life in Oregon is quite different from beach life in SoCal or Florida, even in August. The northern Pacific has no more than 13 degrees celsius, so swimming is more a challenge than a refreshment, even on a nice August day.

I had the Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the mZuiko 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro Zoom with me while I sat in the warm sand and observe the beach life around my.

Remember to dial in a bit of positive exposure compensation. The bright light and white sand tends to suggest the meter in your camera there is too much light in a beach environment, leading to underexposed photos.

I’m back in Portland after a great weekend on the Oregon coast. I took too many photos that will take a few days to sort through and post-process. So like yesterday I show you once more the final image of the day, a sunset scene near Lincoln City. Isn’t this what a drive along the great ocean is all about?

The End of the Road

It was a long trip down the Oregon Coast. I had sunshine on white sandy beaches and spectacular views of a blue Pacific Ocean. I had the incoming seafog turn the coastal rain forest trees to misty giants while hiking along the cliffs of Cape Lookout. I saw seals, and I saw grey whales. My last highlight of this splendid day was the beacon of historic Hecata Lighthouse near Florence, where I’m spending the night. This coast is magic. If you haven’t visited it put in on your bucket list.

The Hecata Head Light was built in 1894, the 56-foot (17 m) tall lighthouse shines a beam visible for 21 nautical miles (39 km; 24 mi), making it the strongest light on the Oregon Coast.

Photo taken with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and the mZuiko 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro Zoom. Image specs are 1/200 sec at f/3.2 and ISO 200. Focal length was 67mm.

Around the World in 12 Days – Hiking on Mount Hood

Have I said that on of the greatest assets of my job is that it allows me connect with so many great people all across the globe. This is especially true for those I work closely with on projects, and this forges bonds beyond pure office colleagueship. With two others of those great guys I teamed up to spend our free Portland Saturday going hiking on Mount Hood. Leaving Portland at 9am we drove the 45 minutes to Zigzag Ranger Station  where we asked for a recommendation for a nice hike on the slopes of Mount Hood. They recommended the Ramona Falls hike, a pretty easy 9 mile loop trail with about a 1000ft elevation gain towards the falls. The first 4 miles of the trail are identical with the famous Pacific Crest Trail, running from Mexiko through the US up to Canada. Toughest part was that we had to cross a mountain stream balancing on tree trunks. The weather was splendid, we had great talks and enjoyed a wonderful 3 hour hikes in the beautiful landscape of Mount Hood National Forest, with views of the 11,240 feet (3,426 m) volcano, walking through fairy like treescapes and capping it with the spectacular Ramon Falls, crashing down a black, 120 feet rock wall.
