The Look

At the end of yesterday’s photography coaching session we were also doing some street shooting where I captured this image that I really like for its high contrast, the shadow separating the two faces and the look I drew.

Live is in overdrive right now, between the job that pays the bills, a family function today and plenty of photography related activities: The two Instagram walks this week, the photo coaching session yesterday and a photo shooting session next weekend (I get to try my hands at a real model). Hardly time to blog or even do some editing or postprocessing.

But live could be worse – it could be boring 🙂

Instant Inspiration (29) – Frame your subject

“Instant Inspiration” is my series for you  if you look for something to overcome “Photographer’s Block”  or simply want to shoot something that you have never tried, or at least not recently. Episode 29 is about a compositional element – using frames.

I am sure you have framed photographs in your house. We frame our photos as a way of displaying and drawing in the attention of the viewers, but there is another type of framing that can be just as effective doing exactly the same thing, only in our images themselves.

Behind the glass

While roaming the streets of a city shooting street life, it is worth also looking at what’s happening behind the glass of shops and businesses. Especially when you are new to street photography, this unobtrusive way of taking pictures of strangers might be a good way to slowly extend your comfort zone, as your subjects tend not to notice you.

Art n’ Motion

When it’s soggy outside, shoot in a gallery or a museum. I gave this advice numerous times on this blog in quite a few posts. When spending a weekend in Portland last month, I once more escaped from torrential rain outside (the Oregonians call it the “Oregon Liquid Sunshine” for a reason) into the Portland Art Museum with the intention to capture some Art n’ Motion.

Love is in the air

This past Valentines Day I was in Portland, Oregon. And while shooting some Street Photography during the weekend spent in the Rose City, there was plenty of Valentines vibes in the air. Some decorations were more weird than others, true to the motto of the city. I originally intended to save those “love is in the air” street photos for a Valentines post next year, but they are also the perfect fit for today, which marks my 26th wedding anniversary.

Time to relax with a coffee in the sun

Sure there was some “Angst” right before pushing the button to activate the new blog theme (Baskerville 2).  I did some testing and experimenting using the new theme’s live preview in the WordPress customization area. When I was happy I went live, hoping that all my blog contents created during the past three years would still be there. It was. This morning I had a chat with the WordPress support to obtain some custom CSS code for viewing platform specific dynamic sizing of my logo that sits on top of whatever header image I desire to feature. I got the code after ten minutes, and it looks ok to me. Also, with the switch to the new (officially supported) theme, it looks like the broken functions are fixed again. The search works. She didn’t look up

Street Photography is about capturing scenes of every day life as it happens. Like this girl reading a book while sitting in the window of a coffee shop in Portland. I liked her style and the just so slight smile on her lips. I was standing on the sidewalk directly in front of her, snapping a few initial photographs. Under the meteorite showers

Ok, technically this is not a meteorite shower. It is an art installation called “Moving Mountains” by PNW artist Annette Bellamy. It is part of the special exhibition “the map is not the territory” in the Portland Art Museum. I took this indoor street photograph during last weekends visit to the museum that I used for some indoor street shooting.

But to me it looks like a meteorite shower. Or a snow- or hail shower. And this is exactly the kind of weather hitting many parts of the continental US today. Making for less than ideal travel conditions for my trip back to the Streets of Nuremberg. Continue reading “Under the meteorite showers” →
