Strolling through Genoa’s Centro Storico the other night I took this street photograph with my Fuji X-T2 and the Fujinon XF 1:2.8-4/18-55mm R LM OIS. I like this shot, for the composition, color balance, light, gesture and the story. I tried a monochrome conversion, but stuck with color. You might note, that the neon sign of the little Trattoria is inverted, as it is transparent and shows the “right” side uphill to were likely more potential customers come from when walking down Via San Bernardo towards the port area. So when doing post production in Lightroom Classic, I mirrored the image horizontally, so the sign reads the right way. But with that, I think, the photograph lost its visual balance. Asinello

After posting all those landscape and nature images, it is about time to get back to some Street Photography, which is still the main theme of this blog. I just love this simple shot I took the other week in Genoa‘s Old Town. Young people queuing after midnight in front of one of La Superba’s most famous “watering holes”, the “Bar degli Asinelli” in Via Canneto il Lungo, enjoying a mild spring night out. Asinello means donkey in Italian, hence the animal on the sign of the bar. But Asinello is also the local liqueur with vermouth, cinchona bark, rhubarb and gentian. Behind the bar, the two legendary owners Adriano and La Marchesa welcome you in an ambience of days gone by, between mirrors and furniture from the sixties.

The image was taken with my iPhone 14 Pro, jpg out of camera.

Mayday

No, there wasn’t the need to call “Mayday” (an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in voice-procedure radio communications) last night. But for sure the 1st of May started with a bang in Genoa, with a front of thundershowers moving in from the sea after three very nice and rather warm spring days.

I took this photograph while sitting on the balcony of our “South” home with a glass of a very good Italian Red, and I captured it with my iPhone 14 Pro. In all fairness, it took me about 60 attempts to finally catch the lightning, and what a nice one it was. Soon after the shot, the rain started pounding and the spectacle was over. It’s still raining, so we’re having a rather wet Mayday. But who would complain about enjoying a very lazy public holiday?

Hide and Seek

It was the purple attire of the lady sitting on a bench in front of the Genoa-Pegli train station that caught my eye. That there was the little dog playing hide and seek behind her boots I realized only with the second glance while passing her and snapping this colorful street shot with my iPhone 14 Pro. Proof once ago that the streets are full of little stories waiting to be discovered and captured. There are a few articles in my Learning center about this, like Instant Inspiration (23) – Hidden Street Portrait and Street Photography Quick Tip 5 – Composition – the hidden subject. Most important, take you camera, hit the streets and have fun capturing the stories of the streets.

Easter is about color. As my Easter Egg for you, I’ll give you a colorful post this Easter Sunday. Enjoy some views of Genoa from above. Exactly one week ago The Significant Other and I had the chance to visit a Candlelight Concert on top of the Grattacielo Piacentini, the highest skyscraper in town. With the concert (film music by Ennio Morricone) came the opportunity to enjoy the splendid views from “La Superba”, as Genoa is affectionately known. Click below for more views of Genoa from above…

Go out and shoot

Go out and shoot – something I need to keep telling myself these days. Which is totally ok, I guess, as photography doesn’t always have to take center stage in life. But then there is the sudden itch to grab a camera. In this case my vintage Olympus PEN-F with the mZuiko 25mm f/1.8 prime lens (50mm full frame equivalent with the m43 crop factor of 2). And heading out into the streets for a late afternoon stroll, capturing life that happens in front of my lens.

Doing Street Photography while visiting museums and exhibitions is one of my favorite things to do with a camera (or in this case just my iPhone). Another opportunity arose during a recent visit to Genoa. The doge’s apartments of the Palazzo Ducale are featuring an exhibition of the work of Emmanuel Radnitzky, better known as Man Ray. It also rains in Genoa

Since having completed work on our Genoa apartment, The Significant Other and I have been down to our new “South home” a few times. But since then, the weather hasn’t been quite our friend yet. Little sun, lots of rain and very inconsistent. Not what you would expect from Italy. It also rains in Genoa. But then again, the weather here is fully in line with the wet winter and mostly grey spring we had in Germany. But the Street Photographer doesn’t care though. Grabbing rain coat and the cam, turning on the subdued monochrome presets and heading out to capture the stories of the streets…..

Back home

We’re back home. The nice thing is that, if you call two places home, you get to be back home quite often. The Significant Other and I are spending the week after Easter at our “South” home in Genoa. And we can enjoy it to the fullest, as we are off from our jobs that pay the bills. So let’s take the camera and head out to the Streets of Genoa for a short stroll through the alleys of the medieval old town. “Benvegnûi” means “welcome” in the Genoese dialect…for a few more quick shots continue after the jump….

Silent Sunday

Have your talked to your partner lately? It seems, this is not only a human problem, as illustrated by this street photograph I’ve titled “Silent Sunday”, taken two Sundays ago in the Streets of Genoa. Capturing scenes like this is for me the fun in street photography. As William Shakespeare said: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women, merely players”.

Here’s a creative tip for today. Grab your camera (or smartphone), head out to the streets of wherever you live and see if you can capture a scene that could be titled “Silent Sunday”.

B&W or Color?

Anyone playing with monochrome conversions in post-processing knows the pondering question: B&W or color? Like I did when looking at this shot of Ascensore Spianata Castelletto, one of the elevators that connect the base of Genoa‘s old town with the higher quarters. From the terrace next to the elevator you have a splendid view across the medieval old town out to the harbor and the Mediterranean beyond. I decided I like the monochrome version better. I think it better fits the elegance of the art deco elevator house. What do you think? Check out the color version after the jump…
