Every time I have visited New York City in the past eighteen years, I was missing the sleek silhouettes of the Twin Towers that have graced the skyline of the Big Apple for almost three decades, until they fell on that fateful day of infamy that was September 11th 2001.
Beach-tennis, volleyball, frisbee – these are the normal games you see everyone playing at the waterline on a hot beach day. But there was also another hot game played to the sound of the waves….
Feet up! Relaxation is the main theme of our vacation on the Ligurian coast. We head down to the beach almost daily. Great food and drinks, reading and swimming is the main program. And an occasional grip to the camera if a beach shot jumps into my view.
Sure enough we spend ample time at the beach, during our Ligurian vacation. And this is always a good opportunity to put my rugged Olympus TG-4 camera to action. Because who says you can shoot street photography only on terra firma? Street? Beach! Sea!
Yesterday we explored 24 kilometers (15miles) of the beautiful Ligurian Flower Riviera by bike, the cycling lane following the railway line of the former coastal railroad from Genoa to Ventimiglia.
The first road trip of our Ligurian vacation went up Valle Argentina to the mountain village of Montalto Ligure, situated like a fortress on a hill at the eastern edge of the valley with interesting, winding, medieval alleys. Join me for a photographic tour of Montalto.

Today, on the second day of our Ligurian vacation, we did a trip up the Argentina Valley from Arma di Taggia to Triora. We toured the medieval mountain town of Montalto Ligure and went on to Triora, another historic town in the Appenin mountains and the site of the last witch trials held in Italy, during the Renaissance. We finished the day at the coast in Taggia, where we visited the artisan Olive oil mill, where The Significant Other, since 2003, annually orders more than 50 gallons of the finest extra virgine olive oil.
Yesterday morning at 4am, The Significant Other, Big Boy and myself took to the roads to head down to Italy. Using only my Olympus PEN-F and the 17mm F/1.2 prime lens, I gave myself the assignment to document our 850 kilometers / 530 miles voyage.
The blazing heat continues across Germany. Photographers complain about the harsh light and mute colors, especially during the day. But as the saying goes, when life gives you lemons, grab salt and tequila. Episode 31 of my “Instant Inspirations” talks about high contrast monochrome photographs.
July is upon us. Not that it makes any difference, as the scorching heat wave of the past two weeks just carries on. Which would make me rather lie down in the shade of a tree near a swimming pool, rather than in a shop window in front of the unforgiving lens of a street photographer. But the heat wave is definitely no reason to get a summer blues.
During our recent visit to the Estonian capital Tallinn we also passed across Freedom Square, which features the Cross of Liberty and the Monument to the War of Independence. The 23.5 meters tall pillar made of 143 glass plates commemorates all those who have for freedom in the Estonian war of independence. While nothing particularly spectacular, it was still worth a documentary shot to be part of my Tallinn travel photos. Let me show you the contact sheet with my shots of Freedom Square.
