Are you a Hunter or a Gatherer ?

Hide and Seek
Hide and Seek | Nuremberg | 2016

Street Photographers tend to fall in two categories. There are the hunters, and then there are the gatherers. Does that concept sound familiar? After all, humans have been hunters and gatherers forever.  Continue reading “Are you a Hunter or a Gatherer ?”

Apocalyptic Fountain

Happiness | Munich | 2016

After a business meeting in Munich yesterday I had a half hour left before my train departed back to Nuremberg. Close to Munich’s Central Station is the Karlsplatz or “Stachus” as it is called by the locals. It is a huge square with a big fountain on it. Knowing it is a good place for Street Photography I just went there to see if any opportunities for some candid shots would open up. Click below for more views of an “Apocalyptic” Fountain….

Red Rush

Red-haired girl rushing by
Red Rush | Nuremberg | 2016

Taken this morning in Nuremberg’s central station in the walkway below the tracks. I saw this girl with the amazing red colored hair coming my way from the opposite end of the tunnel. And I knew I had to somehow take her picture. Getting the Ricoh out the backpack was no option, so my iPhone had to do. Processed in phone with VSCO G2 preset.

Street ? Airport ! (2)

Tunnel Rush | Frankfurt | 2016

Again I’m away from the streets of Nuremberg. I’m spending the week in Dallas on business. Flying out via Frankfurt Airport I managed to get some quick shots with Ricoh GR II.  Continue reading “Street ? Airport ! (2)”

The End of an Era

Sarah
Sarah | 2016

Today is a very emotional day for me. My Big Girl is having her last real day of school today, finishing 12 years of initial education with her last oral exam in Geography. I’m endlessly proud of her.

Partly it is emotional because I’m not home to bid her farewell and good luck for the last test this morning, because I had to leave the house early at 4:30 to catch a flight to Dallas where I’ll be spending the rest of the week on business.

But it is also emotional for me because I can vividly recall my feelings on my very last day of Highschool some 29 years ago. Continue reading “The End of an Era”

When you know you got a winner

Splash Hero | Nürnberg | 2016

Do you know this feeling? You just pressed the shutter button and you know instantly that you bagged yourself a winner, a keeper, without even re-checking the exposed frame on the rear display of your camera. A pic that alone was worth the photographic outing.

Gear & Camera Settings for Street Photography

I often get asked what gear and camera settings I use when venturing out to shoot on the streets. What works for me is less gear and very basic camera settings.

Let’s talk about the gear first. I switched from my Nikon setup to Micro Four Thirds because I was tired carrying around a big backpack with 5 kilos and more of camera equipment but without compromising image quality. Another benefit from using m4/3 gear is that when you carry a big Nikon with a big lense attached (and even Nikon prime lenses are huge pieces of glass) you always get attention, you are automatically regarded as a serious photographer, with all the negativ implications  and restrictions many photographers encounter today when roaming the streets. Now with a m4/3 camera that is much smaller and a small prime lense attached you generate much less attention, blend more in, and that is generally what you are looking for as a street photographer. People tend to much less notice you and when they do, they more regard you as a tourist snapping away than a photographer looking for some serious shots.

The PEN E-PL7 with the 17mm f1.8 attached and the even smaller 45mm f1.8 next to it

Having said that, I typically go out with a single camera, either my OM-D E-M1 or my PEN E-PL7. Attached to it I have typically my M.Zuiko 17mm f1.8 prime lens. 17mm in m4/3 translates to ~35mm in full frame format. A fast, perfect and small piece of glass with excellent image quality. Many  famous street photographers shoot 35mm only, as it is more or less equal to the normal field of view of our eyes. In the streets I  like to shoot wide as my desire is to show people in the context of their environment. Continue reading “Gear & Camera Settings for Street Photography”

Street? Airport!

Who says you can show street photography only while roaming the streets? Airports are great locations to take pictures – “on the fly”.

The following pics I took during my business trip to the US last week at Chicago O’Hare and Washington-Dulles airports. Travelers are generally so in a rush or engulfed in activities or thoughts that it is easy to catch them in candid moments. So next time you take to the skies make sure you take your camera along (or use your smartphone camera, because the best camera is the one you have with you).

Shooting on a rainy Saturday

While doing some shopping downtown I had my Ricoh GR II with me and used the opportunity to snap some pics on this rainy Saturday afternoon. All are taken in Nuremberg’s Karolinenstrasse. I used the high contrast filter on the GR II so I saw the B&W pic on the cams monitor while composing and pressing  the shutter. But as I shot RAW only I got the pics in full color when importing in Lightroom. So I had to reconvert to B&W via VSCO presets in Lightroom. Easiest thing to avoid that is shooting RAW+jpg, so you retain the jpg with the applied in-camera filter for immediate use, plus you have the RAW for more extensive post production options.
