Today was a very warm summer day in Nuremberg. We had a great family barbecue and a good time. With this evening a six week stretch where I slept in my own bed comes to an end. Its back to travel days. I will leave for Egypt tomorrow to spend a good 24 hours in Cairo for some meetings, then fly via Vienna too Budapest for another day of meetings. Then I return to Nuremberg for a few days, then it’s back to the pacific Northwest the week after. Back to the usual life on the road. Both Cairo and Budapest forecast 30 degrees celsius and more. Wouldn’t a dip in cold Ocean waters be the thing to do on hot summer days like these? I invite you to join me for some underwater shots I took in Atlanta’s Georgia Aquarium a few years back. I successfully made it through the week and am now looking forward to a weekend in the Pacific Northwest. After work I drove into downtown for some later afternoon and blue hour shooting. Still fighting some jet lag after arriving in Portland two days ago I’m much too tired to post process my photos, but after a quick scan I send all of us into a well deserved weekend with a photo I took on the famous Steel Bridge that crosses the Willamette River and provides great views across the river towards Broadway-and Fremont Bridges in the upcoming dusk.
Tomorrow I head out to the Oregon Shores of the Pacific Ocean. I’m so much looking forward to it!

The Streets of Portland – Finally
To honor the upcoming Earth Day, this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge bears the title “Earth” to celebrate this planet on which we live.
For me, the ethereal atmosphere in Antelope Canyon perfectly symbolizes the beauty and perseverance of nature. The powerful flow of water once carved out these slot canyons in the barren landscape of Utah over the course of thousands of years, and the sun shining into the narrow canyon has created the magic beams of light in the past and will continue to do so for all future. Let’s all join in protecting the magic of our planet earth.

As the job that pays the bills currently keeps me off the Streets of Nuremberg I can just as well make a virtue of necessity and show you a bit more of my “exile”, the Streets of Portland. And in case any Portlandians ever read this: Rest assured, I honestly LOVE your city already, and the word “exile” isn’t really in place here. Everybody has a bucket list. And to have those goals to see or do things before you call it a day once and for all is what drives you forward in life. And my bucket list is long, definitely too ambitious for my remaining life time. But yesterday I managed to cross out not one, but two of those items I always wanted to do: I skied on a volcano, and I skied in North America. Why those two items were on my bucket list? One from the archives – Monument Valley. Taken during our family vacation to the South-West of the USA in 2012.
Monument Valley (Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii in Navajo language, meaning valley of the rocks) on the border between Arizona and Utah is a region of the Colorado Plateau featuring clusters of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 300 m above the valley floor. The whole valley is a tribal park of the great Navajo Nation.
If you like to watch Cowboy movies you have probably seen these rock formations, as Director John Ford has used the location for a number of his best-known films and thus has created in many of us the pictures that we have in from of our eyes when we think about the American West.
The picture shows the buttes “The Mittens” as well as the loop road which you can take to tour the valley from the parking of the visitor center. If you stay in the hotel “The View” this is what you see out of your rooms.
Back then we were touring with a Camper (RV) and stayed at Goulding’s Campground down in the Valley.
If you ever have the opportunity to visit this iconic location – do it. It is truly a magic place.
