Dreams come True

Last night, Big Girl has made one of her dreams come true. As kid, as probably all girls do, she wanted to be a Ballerina, but for one reason or the other, she never made it to join a ballet group. As teenager, she watched all episodes of the Australian ballet TV series “Dance Academy”, sad she missed the opportunity and stating that she’ll never be a dancer. Then, at the turn of being 20, she signed up for ballet classes at our local adult evening school, together with a friend.

And last night, after a nearly a year of hard work and endless rehearsals, she took to the stage in a production of Romeo and Juliet, all organized and played by the local adult evening school, featuring their ballet classes for adults, teens and children. Big Girl’s group played three supporting roles, first peasant ladies, then maids, and finally some court ladies of Juliet.

For how it came out, more photos and the equipment I used continue after the jump…. Continue reading “Dreams come True”

Never give up

Lunar Eclipse
Lunar Eclipse | Nuremberg | 2018

There were too many clouds in the southern sky. We were enjoying a great dinner with friends and family out on the patio on a warm summer night. Everyone was exited to see the total lunar eclipse. At 22:30, as announced, the International Space Station ISS appeared as a brightly glowing spot out of the North, passing directly overhead before vanishing behind the clouds. We almost gave up hope. But then, all of a sudden, the sky cleared and we had a perfect view of the eclipse. By the time I grabbed the tripod and my Oly, walked a few hundred yards to an open field and set up shop, the moon was already starting to move out of the Earth’s shadow.

The photo was taken with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the 40-150 F/2.8 Pro Zoom with the MC 14 converter attached, giving me a 210mm focal length (equals 420mm in full frame). Image specs are 1/8 sec @ f/4 and ISO 1600. Cropped, curve adjustments and slight sharpening of the RAW was done in Lightroom Classic CC.

Wish you all a great weekend!

Variations on a Tunnel

Chicago Color Therapy 02
1/160 sec @ f/1.8,  ISO 1600,  17mm

Here are some more variations from the passenger tunnel between concourses B and C of Chicago O Hare’s Terminal 1. I took the photos while connecting through ORD last week. They show a different view of the tunnel than the photos I showed in my post “Travel Day (13)“. A good example how you can play with your camera, working the scene with different creative approaches. For three more images continue after the jump…

Totally in sync with multiple clients

Prom Fun
Prom Fun | Seattle | 2018

With the latest update to the Lightroom app (Adobe Lightroom CC 2018) as well as to the desktop version (Lightroom CC Classic), Adobe has finally given us users of the photography suite what we have long been waiting for: the possibility to import our self created presets into the mobile Lightroom CC environment.

Sure enough I had to put it to as test immediately. Once I had imported them from the vaults of the desktop version (they typically reside in the folder /Users/<yourname>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings), they synced perfectly fine across all my mobile clients (iPhone/iPad) via the Adobe cloud (which you get automatically as part of the photography suite subscription).

Now I get even more mobility in my creative post processing work. Basically, I can now work on a RAW file (or jpg) residing in the Adobe cloud on my iPad, using my proven presets, while I’m on the road. Then it syncs perfectly back also into my desktop version, where my main Lightroom catalogue resides.

Me and many other users have waited for this for a long time. Thanks Adobe!

Thunder Night

Gloomy Night
Thunder Night | Nuremberg | 2018 | 1/8 sec – f/2 – ISO 320 – 17mm

The hot summer weather came to a shrieking halt today, as a series of heavy thunderstorms passed over the Streets of Nuremberg. Nature is in dire need of the water after weeks of drought. And after spending the last evenings in the beer gardens of the Old Town, today people were rushing to seek shelter from the arriving torrential rains.

Time for me to work through my emails and catch up with blogging. There is an advantage to everything.

I had a rough weekend and Monday coming down with a bad case of stomach flu. No photographic ventures whatsoever. And the job that pays the bills clouds the rest of the week.

Still I want to take the time to wish all my American friends a peaceful and happy Independence Day!

Travel Day (13)

Color Race
Color Rush | Chicago | 2018

It’s been almost a week since my last post, but it was an intense work week in the Pacific Northwest, that, combined with a bad case of jet lag, left no room for blogging or venturing out with the camera. I had to wait until my return trip to Nuremberg to put the PEN-F and the mZuiko 17mm F/1.8 to work, albeit in one of my favorite connecting locations, Chicago’s O’Hare airport. The colorful tunnel between concourses B and C of ORD Terminal 1 is a great place for some street photography. For a few more photographs taken yesterday continue after the jump…. His last match – and how I captured it

TSV Feucht A-Jugend 03
1/1000 sec @ f/4, ISO 640, 210 mm

I don’t shoot much sports, and of the more than 400 posts published on the “Streets of Nuremberg”, less than a handful were about sports photography. But yesterday was a kind of special day, as the Big Boy played his last career soccer match, and of course I needed to properly capture this on a sensor, as I did also with his very first match, exactly 4628 days ago. He went out in style, scoring a goal in the 2:1 win of his team that also secured promotion of the squad into the next higher league for next year’s team.

To see a few images from yesterday’s game, learn about my photographic approach to get a few decent sports photos plus a trip down memory lane to Big Boys’s first match 13 years ago, continue after the jump….

Instant Inspiration (23) – Hidden Street Portrait

Flower Power
Flower Power | Nuremberg | 2018 | 1/10 sec @ f/4 – ISO 200

After my rather moody last post it is time for a colorful new edition of my “Instant Inspirations”, something for you to try to overcome photographers block or if you simply want to give your photography a new angle. The 23rd episode is for those of my readers who would like to get more into Street Photography, but are hesitant to shoot obvious street portraits of people or even asking interesting looking subjects to “make” their portrait.

For starts, you can try to shoot people who are engulfed in their every day business, unaware of the photographer aiming the camera at them. Obviously, using a longer lens (or zoom) does help not to get too close. But even with a wide angle lens, the camera up at the eye, you can wander through shops, bars or your local market, looking for interesting scenes, people, gestures, colors, patterns – and press the shutter when something catches your eye and gets your creative juices flowing. Move naturally, shoot, and trust me you will not be noticed.

Bar Work-3
Lost in Thoughts | 2018 | 1/60 sec @ f/5.6 – ISO 320

Try different focal lengths, apertures and shutter speeds. Experiment, shoot with the curiosity of a child. Have fun.

Mysterious New York City

Empire State Building
Empire State Building

I’m in a bit of a gloomy mood today, not only for yesterday’s depressing World Cup loss of Team Germany, that was well deserved and does not leave much room for any hope of going very far in this tournament.

I had this post on my launchpad for quite some time now. Trying to look at New York City in a very different way, I took a creative approach in post-processing. After monochrome conversion of my Olympus RAW files in Lightroom Classic CC, I played with selective blurring and darkening to create this moody series about some ironing NYC sites. To see them all continue after the jump…. Continue reading “Mysterious New York City”

Matchday

Nuremberg World Cup-2

Finally the World Cup fever is properly settling in. I was in the kitchen all morning preparing food for a big soccer party with our neighbors this afternoon when Germany takes on Mexiko in their quest to defend the Cup. The weather is fine, so we’ll watch together in our driveway on the big screen. Plenty of food and drinks and hopefully a good match. Let the games truly begin…. Continue reading “Matchday”
