After arriving safely in Portland just after lunch, I went directly to the office for a half day shift. The good thing is, the USA already is on daylight savings time, adding an hour of light in the evening. That way I made it out of the office and up to the Pittock Mansion viewpoint just prior to sunset around 7pm for a quick sundowner shooting session with a pink mountain, prior to succumbing to 24 hour travel- and work day.

While driving back to Portland yesterday evening on Interstate 5 I noticed the Supermoon rising behind Mount Hood as I was already approaching the Columbia River. This was a too awesome opportunity to pass up. I took the next exit and drove just a quarter mile up a road to where I had the first unobstructed view of the big volcano.
Shot with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the mZuiko 12-100 mm F/4. Image specs are 1/320 sec @f/5 and ISO 200, at 100mm focal length, the far end of the zoom. I promise this is no Photoshop, it really was like this. I only slightly increased clarity when RAW processing in Lightroom Classic CC.

Have I said that on of the greatest assets of my job is that it allows me connect with so many great people all across the globe. This is especially true for those I work closely with on projects, and this forges bonds beyond pure office colleagueship. With two others of those great guys I teamed up to spend our free Portland Saturday going hiking on Mount Hood. Leaving Portland at 9am we drove the 45 minutes to Zigzag Ranger Station where we asked for a recommendation for a nice hike on the slopes of Mount Hood. They recommended the Ramona Falls hike, a pretty easy 9 mile loop trail with about a 1000ft elevation gain towards the falls. The first 4 miles of the trail are identical with the famous Pacific Crest Trail, running from Mexiko through the US up to Canada. Toughest part was that we had to cross a mountain stream balancing on tree trunks. The weather was splendid, we had great talks and enjoyed a wonderful 3 hour hikes in the beautiful landscape of Mount Hood National Forest, with views of the 11,240 feet (3,426 m) volcano, walking through fairy like treescapes and capping it with the spectacular Ramon Falls, crashing down a black, 120 feet rock wall. I need to do my Oregonian friends justice. They say there is sunshine in the PNW. And they are right. Here is the proof! This evening I returned from a 12 day trip to Portland. There was one truly beautiful day with sunshine throughout during these 12 days, which was last Friday. This was also when I took this photo of Mount Hood on my way from the office to the hotel. It rained all other days.
But the weather forecast for the weekend and the coming week calls for warm and fair weather in Rose City. Everybody should enjoy it. Because maybe I’m the one bringing (for sure unintentionally) all that rain. And I will be back the week after next ;-). But meanwhile I will enjoy time with the family and on the Streets of Nuremberg.
Photo was taken with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the mZuiko 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro Zoom. Specs are 1/400 sec @ f/11 and ISO200 , focal length was 150mm (equals 300mm in full frame), so I shot at the far end of my zoom. The edge to edge sharpness of this piece of glass is amazing.

After a strenuous travel (Nuremberg-Amsterdam-Seattle-Drive to Portland) I went direct to the office for a first set of meetings. When I got into the hotel I was on a 26 hour day, minus two and a half of sleep I caught on the plane. This happens regularly and it doesn’t kill me as long as it doesn’t happen every week. Weather was gruesome and as feared, my super tight schedule didn’t allow me to see much of Portland during this visit at all. At least I stayed in downtown this time, in the very nice boutique hotel “The Heathman”, a Portland landmark (opened 1923) and recently the set for a few scenes in the movie “50 Shades of Grey”. An complementary upgrade to a suite really made my evening after this super long day. The hotel is beautiful with a stunning library and plenty art work. My first international travel of the year at least brought the opportunity of doing some photography while connecting through Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, on my way to Portland, Oregon. As you know from previous episodes of my series “Street? Airport!”, airports buzzing with travelers provide some awesome opportunities for some quick street shooting while passing through the terminals enroute to the gate.
