Capturing Gesture

Waving Boy
1/640 sec | f/7.1 | ISO 1600 | 100 mm

As I have written many times on this blog, capturing gesture is what makes a street photograph. Like the wave of this boy standing next to a Coke machine in a village in Jordan. I was photographing him out of a moving bus – hence the slightly degraded image quality, because of me shooting at an angle through the bus window.

Jordan explored – Kerak Castle

Kerak Castle
Kerak Castle

Back in November, The Significant Other and I visited Jordan. It was a great trip into a fascinating country. I already wrote about our visit to the ancient Nabatean capital Petra. Today I invite you to a tour of Kerak Castle, a stronghold from the time of the crusaders.

Good friends are like stars

Starry Night
20 sec | f/2.8 | ISO 3200 | 7mm

“Good friends are like stars, you don’t always see them, but you know they’re always there”, an old saying goes.

A Milky Way shot to open the photography year 2020. Taken with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and the mZuiko 7-14mm F/2.8. Image specs 20 sec (camera on a tripod) @ f/2.8 , ISO 3200 and 7mm focal length.

Postprocessing of the RAW in Lightroom Classic – mainly using haze reduction and increasing clarity in parts of the Milky Way, plus some overall sharpness masking and noise reduction.

Wish you a great Thursday!

Marcus

Of course travel photography has played a major for me also in 2019. While the trips for the job that pays the bills have been significantly reduced from 2018, I still had the opportunity for some travels to my beloved Pacific Northwest, and I added a trip to Udaipur, India, late in the year. Private trips had The Significant Other and myself travel, among other short visits to our neighboring countries, to Estonia, Italy and Jordan. And we had our usual share of trips around Germany. So here are a few of my fav travel images from 2019….

Special Christmas Market

Kuchelbauer Weihnachtsmarkt
1/5 sec | f/4 | ISO 1600 | 18 mm

It is really fun, being home all December (which hasn’t happened the past 5 years) and having time to explore the various Christmas markets of our area, enjoy time with friends and family and really get into the holiday spirit. Together with good friends, The Significant Other and myself today traveled to Abensberg (a small town about 100km south of Nuremberg) to visit a special Christmas market.

Christmas Romance

Romantic Christmas
1/60 sec | f/1.8 | ISO 1600

After yesterdays moody Christmas tree image I felt the need to post some real Nuremberg Christmas romance. It shows the Christmas tree on historic Tiergärtnertorplatz, once more with the birth house of Renaissance Super Star Albrecht Dürer in the background. Definitely one of the more romantic views of my city.

Jordan explored – Petra by Night

Al-Khazneh - the Treasury - in ancient Petra, Jordan, illuminated at night.
1/20 sec | f/1.2 | ISO 1600 | 17mm

One of the most memorable experiences of our recent trip to Jordan was experiencing Petra, the ancient capital of the Nabataean Empire, by night. On three evenings per week, visitors can take the one mile passage through the narrow gorge known as Siq down to the legendary Al-Khazneh (Pharao’s Treasury), with the walkway being illuminated by six thousand candles.

Jordan explored – Petra

Al Khazneh – The Treasury

Petra was in ancient times the capital of the Nabataean Empire. Because of its monumental tomb temples, whose facades were carved directly from the rock, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. It was always a dream for The Significant Other and myself to visit Petra and see the magic of Al Khazneh with our own eyes. Now we finally had the opportunity to put a big checkmark on our bucket list.

Jordan Sneak Peek

Al-Khazneh - the Treasury - in ancient Petra, Jordan
Treasury | Petra | 2019

It’s been a busy day at the job that pays the bills. So just a quick sneak peek post today about our visit to the ancient Nabataean city of Petra. We visited this magic place not only during the day, but also walked the mile long narrow canyon to legendary Al-Khazneh, the Treasury, when it was candle lit at night. Full post coming up on the weekend.

Wish you a great Tuesday!

Look for Gesture

Man standing on a intersection in Udaipur

When shooting street photography, I’m always on the look for gesture. Gesture adds interest to images. Don’t just capture people walking with arms hanging at their sides or with expressionless faces.

Udaipur Street Portraits

Look from behind a pole

During last week’s stay in Udaipur I also took the opportunity to go for a 15 minute quick stroll through the old city center. Leaving the PEN-F in my bag in the office, I just took my iPhone 8plus along for the walk. Hoping to make some street portraits.

Maharana Fantasies

Boat landing of Jag Mandir Palce Udaipur by Night

A two day business trip to Chicago. A weekend at home in Nuremberg. A week of vacation touring Jordan. One night at home. Then a four day business trip to India. After crazy two weeks spent on three continents, I’m finally back home for good on the Streets of Nuremberg. A bit worn out, I have to admit, but with some magic impressions from Incredible India.
