Nikon Zf – A Retro Beauty with Modern Power

After my tumultuous journey with the Leica SL2-S, marked by repeated hardware failures and frustrating customer service experiences, I had decided to move on. Prerequisite was to get another full frame camera, as the larger sensors ensure better low light capabilities, greater dynamic range and more depth-of-field-separation (bokeh) when shooting wide open. And I was looking for a camera that is (like the Leica from its design and haptics doubtless also was) a joy to pick up and makes me want to go out and shoot. Only reliable.

Going through all the current full frame models on the market, I quickly set my eyes on a particular model. The brand I knew well from my early DSLR shooting days. These cameras never failed me and were reliable work horses. I knew I needed to look no further. There was a camera I instantly fell in love with. Enter the Nikon Zf – a retro beauty with modern power….and my new baby since a couple of weeks now….

Luna Park with an iPhone

Yesterday, after a long workday, The Significant Other and I headed down to Genoa’s Porto Antico for an “Apericena”, Cocktails combined with Italian Tapas. I was pleasantly surprised, when the Regent of the Household suggested to visit the Summer Luna Park set up in the Harbor on the way back to our place. “So you can take some photographs while I look what the fair has to offer”. No questions asked from my side 🙂 . While having the X-T2 with me, I shot also various images with my iPhone, leveraging the feature to turn images taken with the “Live” function of the camera app turned on into long exposure photographs (you can to that in the photo app). Nightwalkers

There is always something going on in Via Pré, in Genoa’s medieval Centro Storico. In daytime buzzing with live between all those little shops, but also during night. While this street photograph seems very cluttered, I still like it a lot. First of all, Via Pré is normally very cluttered, and then there is a lot going on in the moment I captured that shot around 10:30pm on a sizzling hot August night when walking home with The Significant Other after a nice dinner in the old center. A lot of little stories of the street are told here, each of those nightwalkers going about their daily lives.

Taken with the Fuji X-T2 and the Fujinon XF 1:2.8-4/18-55mm R LM OIS, image specs 1/50 sec @ f/4, ISO 3200 and 40mm focal length (60mm full frame equivalent). Monochrome conversion in Lightroom Classic.

Talking about LCR, I didn’t manage fixing that corrupted catalogue file, so I had to restore from my last June 2nd backup. I lost about two months worth of editing, but as I didn’t photograph much it was overseeable damage. And a good reminder to regularly BACK UP MY DATA. Especially as Lightroom kindly reminds me every week. Only that I typically click that reminder away. Not any more. Promised to myself.

Another week, another exhibition

The Significant Other and I have spent the days before Easter down at our Southern Home in Genoa. Last time we were there we visited the photo exhibition Children by Steve McCurry. The same venue, Genoa’s Palazzo Ducale, now features another of my hero photographers of whom I own various books, Brazilian born Sebastião Salgado. Another week, another exhibition. Doing Street Photography while visiting museums and exhibitions is one of my favorite things to do with a camera (or in this case just my iPhone). Another opportunity arose during a recent visit to Genoa. The doge’s apartments of the Palazzo Ducale are featuring an exhibition of the work of Emmanuel Radnitzky, better known as Man Ray. It also rains in Genoa

Since having completed work on our Genoa apartment, The Significant Other and I have been down to our new “South home” a few times. But since then, the weather hasn’t been quite our friend yet. Little sun, lots of rain and very inconsistent. Not what you would expect from Italy. It also rains in Genoa. But then again, the weather here is fully in line with the wet winter and mostly grey spring we had in Germany. But the Street Photographer doesn’t care though. Grabbing rain coat and the cam, turning on the subdued monochrome presets and heading out to capture the stories of the streets…..

Back home

We’re back home. The nice thing is that, if you call two places home, you get to be back home quite often. The Significant Other and I are spending the week after Easter at our “South” home in Genoa. And we can enjoy it to the fullest, as we are off from our jobs that pay the bills. So let’s take the camera and head out to the Streets of Genoa for a short stroll through the alleys of the medieval old town. “Benvegnûi” means “welcome” in the Genoese dialect…for a few more quick shots continue after the jump….

Seville Explored – Plaza de España

Seville explored – Plaza de España is a post about a stunning architectural masterpiece located in the heart of Seville, Spain. Built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, the plaza is a fusion of Spanish Renaissance and Moorish architectural styles, designed by the architect Aníbal González. More than a thousand workers worked on its construction at the same time. Constructions began as early as 1924 and were completed by architect Vicente Traver in 1928, after Aníbal González resigned as the Exposition’s chief architect. After a two and a half hour flight, The Significant Other and I safely arrived in Sevilla. What a change in weather. From snowy 1 degrees Nuremberg we arrived in sunny and summerly Southern Spain with 24 degrees. After checkin into the hotel conveniently situated in the old town near the Cathedral, we went out for some Tapas. Continuing our first walk through the alleys, we had the unexpected joy to stumble into the colorful parade of the Bolivian Street Carnival. Continue after the jump for more of this fun event…

Hangover

The political correct term should be layover, rather than hangover. After all, the dictionary definition for layover is “a period of rest or waiting before a further stage in a journey.” But I’m sure, the one or other patron of this waterhole might also get himself a hangover while waiting for the connecting flight. Tilted

For today’s post I selected a color street photograph, one I call “tilted”. I generally love black & white street photos. Colors can draw the viewer’s attention away from the main subject of the photo. Bright or contrasting colors can create a visual noise that detracts from the overall composition of the photograph. This can be especially true if the captured colors are not balanced or if they do not complement each other in a pleasing way.

In some cases, however, the use of color can be intentional and can enhance the overall impact of a street photograph. The photographer might use color to draw attention to a specific detail or element within the scene, or to create a particular mood or atmosphere.

The slightly irritated view of the girl noticing a a photographer pointing a Leica SL2-S at her face would have just as well worked in black & white. But I felt that the unusual, tilted position of the little figure in the red lamp of the pedestrian crossing traffic light needed color to work, to get noticed.

The key is to use color deliberately and thoughtfully, rather than allowing it to distract from the main subject or message of the photograph.

I took the photograph with my Leica SL2-S and the Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8/24-70 ASPH. Image specs are 1/400 sec, f/4.5, ISO 3200 and 61mm focal lenght.

The fun thing when roaming the streets with a camera in hand is, that you never know what the real life happening around you has in store for you. The important thing is to keep the eyes open. Then you can discover all sorts of interesting things. Like the brand new Airphone Pro Max Plus, that the guy standing in Genoa’s Via Garibaldi is using.

The image was taken with my iPhone 14 Pro and post-processed (incl. B&W conversion) in Lightroom Classic.
