Street Photography Quick Tip 8 – Capturing Gesture
Time for another of my Street Photography Quick Tips. One of those short, easy to read and easy to use tips that I think could help you while shooting in the streets. Today’s post is about capturing gesture. Don’t just capture people walking with arms hanging at their sides or with expressionless faces. Gestures can convey strong emotions in your photographs. It is Good Friday. For many this day is the start to a long Easter Weekend. Time for relaxation, time to spend with families and friends. For many this is a day to celebrate and live their faith.
To this day I never felt the intensity of a Good Friday more than back in 2002 when we spent Easter in Sicily and watched the Good Friday procession in the Old Town of Trapani.
Whatever you do and wherever you are, I wish you a peaceful, blessed and happy Easter!

Frequent readers probably know by now that I try to meet the Weekly Photo Challenge from Word Press’ “The Daily Post” with one of my Street Photos. This week’s challenge has the theme “Surprise”.
While visiting Tanzania last year (a trip organized by our local church parish), on one of our tours out of Moshi (where we were based) we also visited the little town of Muikwa on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro where we took a stroll on a small path through lush vegetation and little coffee and banana farms left and right the way. And in this very remote (touristically speaking) area all of a sudden a wild and laughing group of young kids in school uniforms came downhill towards us.
Based on their “surprised” reaction I assume they never before saw or could have expected a group of foreign visitors wandering up the small path through their settlement.
Communication obviously was limited to smiles and waving hands and their curious looks in the display of my camera that got them really exited. While the little students disappeared into the settlements left and right of the path we continued a bit uphill were we eventually found their school, the Maremi Primary School. Last night I went to a poetry and blues evening with Fitzgerald Kusz reading poems to the legendary blues play of Klaus Brandl. The two Nuremberg cultural greats pulled off an awesome show. After a mega intense work week in Portland this combination of poetry in frankonian dialect and blues really slowed me down and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was never a big reader of poetry. Maybe the combination of music and words did the trick, I was really fascinated by the poems about day to day life scenes. And I loved Fitzgerald Kusz’s frankonian Haikus.
When back home I read about what makes a Haiku and the basic rules. Thanks for the know how the web provides. This morning I wrote my first Haiku. Photography and Haiku is also a combination that could go well together. I believe in cross-pollination !

When I read the theme of this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge: Security, I immediately had this street portrait of a Tanzanian Security Guard in mind. He was protecting the entrance of a bank in Moshi, Tanzania. And he loved to pose for my camera. But while scanning over my street photo collection I also found this more subtle interpretation of the theme which I took in the old town of Marseille last year.
I hope you enjoy my interpretation of “Security”.

StoNur on the Road – Banana Streets
Spring has blessed the Streets of Nuremberg, people all are out and about, seeking those warming rays and a relaxed Saturday in Nuremberg’s pedestrian zone. Also for me an opportunity to look for some fresh street photos with my Olympus PEN-F. In this shot it was the striking symmetry of sun bathers on the bench, pedestrians moving into the scene from both sides in the background and the window dressing dummies right and left of the tree that caught my eye. Me and my significant other were sitting in a cafe enjoying a great double espresso and I was merely waiting for the elements to fall into place. Image specs are 1/320 sec @ f/5,6 and ISO 200. I shot in P-Mode. Fore some more photos and the stories to the images continue after the jump….
You want to know why I love my city? Just look! The first day of April is a day full of springtime magic in Nuremberg’s historic Old Town at the banks of the Pegnitz River. Maxbrücke to the left, Weinstadel and Henkersturm in the center, the wooden Henkersteg to the right. This would not have looked any different on a spring day four hundred years ago. Tomorrow before sunrise I’ll head back to the Pacific Northwest. But today I enjoy this splendid spring day on the Streets of Nuremberg.

As the job that pays the bills currently keeps me off the Streets of Nuremberg I can just as well make a virtue of necessity and show you a bit more of my “exile”, the Streets of Portland. And in case any Portlandians ever read this: Rest assured, I honestly LOVE your city already, and the word “exile” isn’t really in place here. So in the coming months the Streets of Nuremberg, temporarily turned Streets of Portland, will introduce more and more of Rose City or PDX, as Portland is also affectionately known. Today I show you some photos I took on my weekend walk through the Pearl District, originally a quarter of old empty brick warehouses, now turned into an urban designer’s dream. I know this is not the prettiest of photos. I took it handheld with 1/2 sec shutter speed and a whopping ISO 25600. Out of the window of an airliner that was shaking from light turbulence. But for me it meant the world. Just a week after crossing off two items from my bucket list when skiing on Mount Hood I saw the very first Northern Lights of my life. And this was in the top 3 of my list. It came upon me out of the night sky 38.000 feet above the Northern Atlantic. For the full story and a few more images continue reading after the jump…
