2019 is slowly but steady coming to a close, and I’m using the downtime of the holidays to go through my Lightroom catalogue from 2019 and reflect on my photographic journey through the past year. I have divided the images into 5 categories: street, travel, people & events, shots from my hometown Nuremberg and, for everything that didn’t fit into any of the above, a category called objects. And that’s the one I’m gonna start with today.

We’re almost there, Christmas is nearly upon us. Together with The Significant Other, Big Boy and Big Girl plus the grand parents I headed downtown for a last visit to the market. A quite traditional visit, as every year on the last evening before Christmas (remember, we Germans celebrate on the 24th), the wife and her trombone choir perform on the stage in front of the Church of our Lady at Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt.

The other night, The Significant Other and myself went into town for some quick errands. Before leaving, I was seriously debating myself whether to bring one of my Olympus cams along. “Nawhh, won’t be doing photography anyway”, said the seasoned street shooter to himself, considering we had drizzling rain and planned only for a quick splash & dash into the shopping area. Well…guess what?

Who says that Christmas photographs have to be all colorful and bright? Here is my version of a moody Christmas tree. Taken on the walls of the Imperial Castle Nuremberg with my Olympus PEN-F and the mZuiko 25mm F/1.8.
Image specs 1/60 sec @ f/1.8 and ISO 1600. Heavily desaturated (it is not a B&W conversion) in Lightroom Classic. I also introduced some grain and burned (brightened) the heavy rain clouds around the tree.
I felt like being moody today.

When Friday night the wheels of my KLM flight from Manchester via Amsterdam back to Nuremberg kissed the asphalt of the runway of my hometown’s airport, another crazy work week came to an end. And, fingers crossed, this should have been the last air travel of this year. Coincidentally, Friday night this year’s Christmas season kicked off with the grand opening of Nuremberg’s famous Christkindlesmarkt. While I arrived much too late to make it to the opening ceremony last night, this evening I grabbed my camera and the Significant Other and headed to one of the many local Christmas markets for our start into the Season of Lights.

Today, on the second day of our Ligurian vacation, we did a trip up the Argentina Valley from Arma di Taggia to Triora. We toured the medieval mountain town of Montalto Ligure and went on to Triora, another historic town in the Appenin mountains and the site of the last witch trials held in Italy, during the Renaissance. We finished the day at the coast in Taggia, where we visited the artisan Olive oil mill, where The Significant Other, since 2003, annually orders more than 50 gallons of the finest extra virgine olive oil.

July is upon us. Not that it makes any difference, as the scorching heat wave of the past two weeks just carries on. Which would make me rather lie down in the shade of a tree near a swimming pool, rather than in a shop window in front of the unforgiving lens of a street photographer. But the heat wave is definitely no reason to get a summer blues.
Some times, the photographic opportunities fly to you. Literally. After all, this is the wild Pacific Northwest. And after three days stuck in a meeting room, with not so much of a chance to take the camera downtown Portland for some street shooting, I got my chance at a fun photoshoot with a family of Canada geese that passed the glass front of our meeting room.
