Resilient she stands

Instead of the bustling Christmas market on the main square there is emptiness and silence on the first advent weekend in the Streets of Nuremberg, with people being asked to stay home and most activities being shut down due to our second lockdown.

But resilient she stands, the old city, as she has for the past 970 years, having survived the plague waves of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries as well as the destructions of the aerial attacks during World War II that destroyed 90% of the buildings within the city walls. And the Imperial Castle, the mighty bell towers of St. Sebald church and City Hall will still be there when this ugly pandemic will finally subside.

Nuremberg Explored (9) – Rochusfriedhof

A rose for the dead

This weekend marks the start of Advent season, the four weekends prior to Christmas. Which, under normal circumstances, turns Nuremberg into Christmas City. Not so this year. For the first time since World War II the traditional Christkindlesmarkt has been cancelled, as have been all other Christmas events in the city that has been paralyzed by Covid-19 and the renewed lockdown in place until (for now) just before the holidays.

So instead bringing you the festive lights from the start of the holiday season on the Streets of Nuremberg, I visited a more somber place for some creative shooting with my little Ricoh GR III, the Rochusfriedhof. Take a tour around one of Nuremberg’s historic cemeteries in the 9th edition of my series Nuremberg Explored.

Rain and Rights

It’s been literally weeks that I was downtown with a camera, but today The Significant Other an I visited the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, one of our last outings before Germany goes back into a 4 week Covid lockdown coming Monday. Nuremberg is already a hotspot with new cases spiking, so the city imposed mandatory mask wearing for everyone inside a public building or shop and out on the streets. After exiting the Museum, I used the opportunity for some street shooting around the entrance to the Way of Human Rights, one of my favorite photo locations in the city.

Autumn Views

Enjoying the Autumn sun

This past weekend, the soft Autumn sun has graced Franconia, so yesterday I grabbed The Significant Other and my Leica M and headed out for a hike in the Steigerwald, a hilly region rising up to 500 meters above sea level and bordering on the valley of the River Main. The slopes down to the river are famous for their vineyards. And, this time of the year, are also famous for their colorful autumn views.

Fair enough – this is an older street photograph, but one I never posted. But doesn’t it fit perfectly into these crazy days? I guess the space suit works just as well for virus protection. But who wouldn’t want to beam up these days?

Nürnberger Sommertage
Old Town Fair | Nuremberg | 2020

Just a quick post today, with a photograph I took when The Significant Other and I visit the Old Town Fair that the city has organized on Nuremberg’s Central Market, as kind of compensation for the two big city fairs that had to be cancelled due to Covid this year. Does it then make sense to still have fair with a ferris wheel, a rollercoaster, an auto scooter and a carousel when cases are still raising with all the people returning from vacation? I’m not sure, but it sure was fun. Fully masked though….

Positive side effects

Pretty Woman in a restaurant in Nuremberg Old Town

Who would have thought that Covid has some positive side effects. And I’m not talking global effects, like blue skies without contrails, clean city air and coast lines that see sea life returning. To compensate reduced occupancy due to distancing requirements, the City of Nuremberg allowed restaurants in the Old Town to put tables out on the streets combined with blocking traffic and turning streets into pop-up pedestrian zones.

On the weekend, The Significant Other and I made use of it, enjoying a dinner together with friends in an excellent French Restaurant in a beautiful alley in the Old Town below the magnificent towers of St. Sebald Church.

I took this photograph of my beautiful wife with the Leica M and the Elmarit-M F/2.8 28mm. Image specs are 1/25 sec @ f/3.4 and ISO 3200. The Leica handles the ISO quite well, the only challenge was to manually focus the rangefinder to make sure her profile is sharp. Who says a 28mm isn’t suitable for portraits? There is nothing like the smooth rendering of the Leica lenses shot wide open.

Isolation

Weather Check

Weather Check

I have no idea if the guy staring into his cellphone was checking the weather. But a weather check for the Streets of Nuremberg would have shown a cold front passing through today, with heavy rains and a significant drop in temperature. Was definitely time for a warm jacket for everyone out and about.

I was playing around with my Elmarit F/2.8 90mm on the Leica M. Image specs 1/125 sec @ f/4 and ISO 3200. The high ISO is not a problem for the M, and the monochrome images directly out of camera are quite beautiful. The backdrop shows the historic Heilig-Geist-Spital with the River Pegnitz passing underneath.
