StoNur on the Road – Chennai Beach Life

The Streets of Nuremberg (StoNur) are on the Road again, well, were, I should rather say, as this series about everyday beach life in Chennai, India, was taken during a business trip back in 2010. The start into the working week at home was quite tough, not much time for blogging, and for sure no time for any photography. While driving home I saw a nice sunset, but was unable to capture it. So now, shortly before midnight, I did a quick dip into my vast Lightroom archive searching for sunsets and I came across this one I took back in 2003 on Sardinia, the magic island off the west coast of Italy. Back then I was just three years into digital photography and my camera was a Minolta Dimage A1. Anyone members that?

Sometimes I love diving back into my archive, look at the images and still can recall the emotions of that special warm summer evening on Sardinia. I lived four years in Italy and I have still plenty memories to share from that time.

A Sunday Haiku

A tranquil morning
fish wonder who will eat them
thoughts drift out to sea

Last night I went to a poetry and blues evening with Fitzgerald Kusz reading poems to the legendary blues play of Klaus Brandl. The two Nuremberg cultural greats pulled off an awesome show. After a mega intense work week in Portland this combination of poetry in frankonian dialect and blues really slowed me down and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was never a big reader of poetry. Maybe the combination of music and words did the trick, I was really fascinated by the poems about day to day life scenes. And I loved Fitzgerald Kusz’s frankonian Haikus.

When back home I read about what makes a Haiku and the basic rules. Thanks for the know how the web provides. This morning I wrote my first Haiku. Photography and Haiku is also a combination that could go well together. I believe in cross-pollination !

Weekly Photo Challenge: Security

When I read the theme of this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge: Security, I immediately had this street portrait of a Tanzanian Security Guard in mind. He was protecting the entrance of a bank in Moshi, Tanzania. And he loved to pose for my camera. But while scanning over my street photo collection I also found this more subtle interpretation of the theme which I took in the old town of Marseille last year.

Long Distance Birthday Kisses

Today is a happy day! My big boy is turning 17. But it is also a very hard day. For me. Because it is the first time I can not be with him to celebrate. Because I’m half a world away. It is the first time ever in my life that I’m not home for a family birthday. To be where the job that pays the bills requires me to be was the only rational decision. We face-timed while back at home he blew out the candles on his birthday cake and unwrapped his presents before going to school. While video phoning home I  was already in bed ready to go to sleep after a long workday in Portland. Where I was it wasn’t even his birthday yet due to the 9h time difference. I was there but I was not there. Virtual hugs and kisses are not the same. Happy Birthday, Daniel! Love you, kiddo!

Spring Streets

Spring has blessed the Streets of Nuremberg, people all are out and about, seeking those warming rays and a relaxed Saturday in Nuremberg’s pedestrian zone. Also for me an opportunity to look for some fresh street photos with my Olympus PEN-F. In this shot it was the striking symmetry of sun bathers on the bench, pedestrians moving into the scene from both sides in the background and the window dressing dummies right and left of the tree that caught my eye. Me and my significant other were sitting in a cafe enjoying a great double espresso and I was merely waiting for the elements to fall into place. Image specs are 1/320 sec @ f/5,6 and ISO 200. Monday Mountains (7)

Yesterday was travel day. Once more I took my usual Delta flight from Amsterdam to Portland. Apart from sitting 3 hours in the plane while still on the ground in AMS (they were fixing a problem with the water system) and apart from finally having a few new movies on the entertainment system (with the start of the new month) it was a totally uneventful and photographically dull flight with one single exception: while starting the decent into PDX we passed Mount Rainier in very close proximity, and the top of the highest stratovolcano of the Cascades Range was raising above the otherwise solid cloud cover. Enough to warrant the seventh episode of my Monday Mountains. For more info about Mount Rainier and more photos continue after the jump….

This is why I love my City!

You want to know why I love my city? Just look! The first day of April is a day full of springtime magic in Nuremberg’s historic Old Town at the banks of the Pegnitz River. Maxbrücke to the left, Weinstadel and Henkersturm in the center, the wooden Henkersteg to the right. This would not have looked any different on a spring day four hundred years ago. Tomorrow before sunrise I’ll head back to the Pacific Northwest. But today I enjoy this splendid spring day on the Streets of Nuremberg.
