NYC Experience – DUMBO

Bokeh Bridge
Bokeh Bridge | New York City | 2018 | 1/10sec @ f/4 and ISO 200

DUMBO stands for “Down under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”, the Brooklyn neighborhood on the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. Originally a ferry landing, with 19th- and early 20th-century industrial and warehouse buildings, the area is now a hip and expensive neighborhood with plenty bars, restaurants and fancy apartments in the converted brick buildings.

I love NYC

From Manhattan it best can be reached via the A-Line Station “High Street / Brooklyn Bridge”. Form the station you can easily reach beginning of the famous walkway of the Brooklyn Bridge, or you can wander down to the East River  to take in the awesome views of the Manhattan downtown skyline and the massive two bridges crossing the East River, best seen from the Brooklyn Bridge Park.

I was quite amazed by the nice bokeh my mZuiko 12-100mm f/4 produced at its widest aperture, and I loved experimenting a bit in the waning light of a splendid NYC day.

Blue Hour Skyline

What also sets this lens apart, is the awesome lens internal image stabilization. I shot the next two photos with a shutter speed of 1/5 sec hand-held, and they are real sharp. This saves me lugging around a tripod, which is a key benefit when roaming a full day through a city on foot. Shooting low light with this lens and my Olympus OM-D E-M1 is so much fun. Despite the slow shutter speeds I could keep ISO at by, never exceeding 1600 (which is no problem noise-wise on the Olympus). And at f/4, the lens is still sharp across the frame and along the full zoom range. A great piece of glass.

If you want to rest a bit and are in for a pizza, directly underneath the bridges are various Italian restaurants featuring coal fired brick pizza ovens, something that is not allowed across the East River in Manhattan for fire prevention reasons. We went to Grimaldi’s on Front Street.

The Bridge
The Bridge | New York City | 2018  | 1/5 sec @ f/4 and ISO 1600

This photograph of the Manhattan Bridge behind brick buildings of Washington Street, with the Empire State Building visible beneath the bridge was on my “must have shot” list. During my earlier trips to the Big Apple I never made it to DUMBO, and I have a framed photograph of this famous view by German photographer Steffen Böttcher (“Stilpirat”)  hanging in my office. So sure we finished our tour with this iconic view, just down from the High Street subway station.

Have a great Wednesday!

My New York City Eye Opener

Eye Opener
Eye Opener | New York City | 2018

This is my New York City eye-opener from this morning, in the truest sense of the word. When I opened my eyes at 6:05am this morning, this is what I saw from my pillow. Our hotel room has floor to roof glass windows, and sure we slept with the curtains open, with the view of the downtown Manhattan skyline. I grabbed my E-M1 and squeezed off a shot through our windows at 1/5 sec, f/4 and ISO 200, to capture the magic of the pre-sunrise blue hour.

The debate was not really a debate. We threw some clothes on and took the stairs from the 12th floor (where our room is) to the rooftop on the 19th floor of our hotel in the Meetpacking District directly above the Highline Park. In the midst of a freezing morning (it was 32F / 0C) we enjoyed, all by ourselves, a magic Manhattan sunrise.

The rooftop has also a glass wall, in which I captured the reflections of the sunrise behind the midtown skyline (behind us) and the downtown skyline with the new World Trade Center. No double exposure, a single shot. 1/320 sec @ f/7.1 and ISO 200. Lens was the 12-100mm F/4 I brought along with my OM-D E-M1.

Room with a View | New York City | 2018

I took this panorama with my iPhone from the roof, this is practically the same view we enjoy from our room, only without any window reflections. Isn’t this a million dollar view? Life is good! Today we head downtown to World Trade Center and the 9/11 memorial and museum.

Have a great Monday!

A Touch of Spring

Sun Walled
Sun Walled | Nuremberg | 2018

Together with the Significant Other I headed into town yesterday, where we seemingly met the rest of Nuremberg’s population, as everybody was drawn out to just a touch of spring, with the sun shining from a spotless sky and temperatures hitting almost double digits. And everyone was trying to find her or his spot in the sun.

Oranges
Oranges | Nuremberg | 2018

I brought the Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the mZuiko 12-100mm F/4 for some snapshots of the sun seekers. Oh, and just for the case I haven’t mentioned it yet on this photography blog (I know I have numerous time), don’t forget to check your camera settings before you start shooting, they might be way off from your last photographic outing.

Stupid me shot the whole afternoon with ISO 3200, which was still dialed in from me shooting the inflight Polar Lights during my return flight from Portland last weekend. No I was lucky, because the OM-D handles noise quite well and there is no issue of having a grainy look on street photographs. Best is we all put a piece of paper in your camera bags with the text “check your settings”….or better make it a habit to reset them after every outing with your camera.

Spring Break | Nuremberg | 2018

So far it was a good weekend, with the beautiful sunny Saturday. The daughter of a very good friend married yesterday, and at least they got very decent weather for their special day, after a mostly grey and cold week. Also this morning looks promising, the sun is shining, the sky is blue, although temperatures are still way below freezing. But I hope again for the afternoon, and coffee and cake in the sun. And some more photography with the correct ISO 😉

Wish you all a happy and sunny Sunday!

Rip City Experience

Rip City Experience 01

After flying into Portland on Tuesday and four intense work days, I finally got off Friday night and treated myself to something special, visiting my first ever professional basketball game. The opportunity was too good to pass up, as defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors came to town to take on Portland’s Trail Blazers, both currently in second and third place in the Western Conference. For my photographs of this memorable evening and some in game experience continue after the jump…. Continue reading “Rip City Experience”

Pizza Rush
Pizza Rush | Portland | 2017

I was waiting on the opposite side of W. Burnside Street in Portland for a pedestrian to pass in front of this advertisement of a Pizza Parlor. As Burnside is a street with heavy traffic, the problem was to catch a subject in perfect stride in front of the sign just as there was a gap in the passing cars. In the course of 10 minutes I snapped three photos, of which I liked this one the best, as the guy (who was in reality heading to Powell’s books that is just across the street) was in a perfect stride, his legs mimicking the triangle of the pizza slice. I was fine with the shutter speed of 1/80 sec which gave me a slight blur on the subject (you really need about 1/125 to freeze a moving person). I would be interested in your opinion whether you would have preferred the subject to be pin sharp. Let me know in the comment section.

Image specs are 1/80 sec @ f/5.6 and ISO 500. Taken with the Olympus PEN-F and and the mZuiko 14-150mm F/4-5.6 travel zoom.

Have a great weekend!

Late Summer Family Street Fun

Late Summer Family Fun 05
1/160 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 1600, 120mm focal length

The day was too beautiful not to use it for some shooting in town, so I escaped for an hour into Nuremberg’s Old Town in the late afternoon of this last day of September. It was surprisingly warm, and everybody enjoyed what was potentially the last warm day of summer. Inspired by the atmosphere I was consciously looking for scenes of kids and their parents having fun together. I like giving me these small photographic assignments, it helps me to quickly focus and get into the flow (especially when I have only limited time for shooting) and to train visual awareness. I was with my Olympus PEN-F and the mZuiko 14-150mm F/4-5.6 travel zoom. For the rest of this series continue after the jump… Continue reading “Late Summer Family Street Fun”

A window in the sky

window in the sky
Window in the Sky | Germany | 2017
The summer has been wild here in Germany, with scorching hot days being interrupted by massive thunder showers causing flooding and heavy damage all over the country.

This photo of some distant cumulonimbus clouds visible between two cloud layers I took with my Olympus PEN-F with the mZuiko14-150mm travel zoom.  Image specs are 1/320 sec @ f/6.3, ISO 200 and 135mm focal length.

Raw conversion in Lightroom CC. I cropped the image to 16×9 format. After increasing the dynamic range by manual setting of the white and black points I reduced the highlights and opened up the shadows. After increasing saturation and contrast a tad I played with the tone curves, further bringing out the details in the thunderstorm clouds. Finally I increased the luminance of the reds and oranges in the HSL panel.

I’m thinking of getting a large print from this. Haven’t made up my mind yet.

Have a good week!

Portland Pearl District
Old Warehouse in the Pearl District | Portland | 2017

As the job that pays the bills currently keeps me off the Streets of Nuremberg I can just as well make a virtue of necessity and show you a bit more of my “exile”, the Streets of Portland. And in case any Portlandians ever read this:  Rest assured, I honestly LOVE your city already, and the word “exile” isn’t really in place here. So in the coming months the Streets of Nuremberg, temporarily turned Streets of Portland, will introduce more and more of Rose City or PDX, as Portland is also affectionately known. Today I show you some photos I took on my weekend walk through the Pearl District, originally a quarter of old empty brick warehouses, now turned into an urban designer’s dream. A Travel Night full of Magic

Aurea Borealis
Aurea Borealis | Northern Atlantic | 2017

I know this is not the prettiest of photos. I took it handheld with 1/2 sec shutter speed and a whopping ISO 25600. Out of the window of an airliner that was shaking from light turbulence. But for me it meant the world. Just a week after crossing off two items from my bucket list when skiing on Mount Hood I saw the very first Northern Lights of my life. And this was in the top 3 of my list. It came upon me out of the night sky 38.000 feet above the Northern Atlantic. For the full story and a few more images continue reading after the jump…

On the Streets of Portland again

Portland Color Night Steet Photography
On Target | Portland | 2017

Back in the Rose City, staying once more at the Heathman Hotel on Portland’s Broadway. The week was all work without as much as a chance to touch my camera, but Friday night I took the Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the mZuiko 12-40mm F/2.8 along while going to the Target supermarket in Morrison Street to by myself some basic supplies (there is just no way eating out every night on a two-week business trip). The above photo I took in front of one of the shop windows of the Target. I loved the lady boxer, positioned myself at the rail of the city train station tin my back and then it was just a matter of the right person walking by. I took the image at 1/80 sec @ f/5 and ISO 1000 with 30mm focal length. For a fe more photos continue after the jump…

Today is March 1st. Technically we are in Spring now. Although it doesn’t show here in the Pacific Northwest. It’s freezing cold and it’s still raining. As promised in my last post I’m showing a few more photographs I took on Portland’s “Pill Hill” the other night. Weekly Photo Challenge: Repurpose

Repurpose
Repurpose | Tanzania | 2016

Yessss…I did it again 😉 Also this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge “Repurpose” I can answer with a Street Photography image.  A man making shoe soles out of old car tires. If this does not qualify as being a repurpose I don’t know what else could….

I took this photo in the Streets of Moshi in Tanzania.  The camera I used was my Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the mZuiko 14-150mm Travel Zoom, image details are 1/100 sec, f/5,6 @ ISO 200 and 42mm focal length (= 84mm full frame equivalent due to the m4/3 crop factor of 2).

Have a great weekend!
