Weekly Photo Challenge: Collage

After two more abstract challenges in the past weeks we have a more hands on theme for this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge from Word Press’ “The Daily Post”: “Collage“.

When reading the motto of the challenge I immediately had these street photos in my mind, that I always wanted to post but never found a right context to do so.

I’m also glad I for this challenge because it provided me with an opportunity for a quick an easy post. If you’ve read my last post you know that I’m currently on a 12 Day – Round the World – business trip. The first leg took me to my usual project site in Portland, Oregon. During the flight across the Atlantic Ocean I was treated with some spectacular views on Greenland and North Canada and I was able to shoot some very nice photos, but the last two days in Rose City were really kind of crazy work wise, so I didn’t get to process my images from the flight yet.

So owing you some views of the Arctic North I leave you with this photo of a real Portland collection.  So, even if under stress, little photo opportunities are everywhere, you just need to train your eye to see them.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Delta

Taking Time

This week the weekly photo challenge (WPC) from Word Press’ “The Daily Post” has the theme “Delta“. We are called to share a photo that signifies transitions and change. As this is very close last week’s challenge “Transient” I take a slight angle on the theme.

A delta is also the difference between two locations, the difference in time and distance between two locations. Both interpretations are covered by the above Street Photo I took in Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. The guy in the video screen of the gigantic clock working to determine the exact time by drawing a new minute hand. The plane behind the huge windows ready to cover the delta in distance and time to its overseas destination. Coincidentally, the big Airbus is from Delta Airlines. I took the photo  with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and the mZuiko 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro Zoom.

To also cover the much more traditional interpretation of a river delta here are two photographs from the Columbia River Delta in Oregon. The image of the Astoria-Megler-Bridge spanning the mouth of the Columbia River was taken at 13sec,  f/20 and ISO 200. The photo of the ship was taken from the old docks in Astoria, image specs are  8sec f/16 and ISO 200. Both photos were taken with the Olympus PEN-F and the mZuiko 12-40mm F/2.8 Pro Zoom.

Instant Inspiration (19) – Tell your day in two photos

“Instant Inspiration”  is my series for you if you feel you suffer from “Photographer’s Block”  or simply want to shoot something that you have never tried. Or at least not recently. Read the posts, become inspired, take your camera, head out and have fun!

Episode 19 should inspire you to describe your day’s content with just two photos.

The idea to this inspiration came to me while on my “usual” Delta flight from Amsterdam to Portland. “Usual” ? Well,  despite having not travelled to Rose City in the past six weeks, this is already my tenth business trip to the USA this year, and we are not even at the half year mark. And in addition to this trip there will be minimum two more travels to PDX before my summer vacation. And I really like being in the USA. Since my days as an exchange student in Pennsylvania some 33 years ago,  I consider the USA my adopted second home country. I have been here countless times for travel and on business. And I liked each and every trip.

The thing is, this short trip is packed full of “road work”. I have meetings lined up from the moment of arrival until I step back on the plane for the return flight Friday afternoon. No time for photography this time. But thankfully there is the archive (I took the two photos during one of my last trips to Portland).

Weekly Photo Challenge: Evanescent

“Evanescent” – soon passing out of sight; quickly fading or disappearing – this is the title of this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge from Word Press’ “The Daily Post”.

When I read this week’s theme in my WP reader I was just traveling by bus from Nuremberg to Berlin where I will spend the long weekend we have here in Germany due to our public holiday on Thursday.

Looking out the window I couldn’t imagine a more appropriate example of “evanescent”, as every single second the landscape in front of my window was disappearing behind the bus riding on the Autobahn.

Street Photography Quick Tip 10 – Using Photographic Obstacles

My Street Photography Quick Tips are short, easy to read and easy to use tips that I think could help you while shooting in the streets. Today’s post is about using photographic obstacles to your advantage.

Have you ever found a parked car blocking that perfect view in a city you visit? Well, you  can try to walk around, but sometimes that won’t help because the nice perspective disappears or there is another obstacle blocking your view.

Well, as simple solution can be: Use it to your advantage. Include it in the composition. It just might made an otherwise boring composition all that more interesting. In this case I included the front window and the roof of a parked car als reflection surface while taking this shot in Nuremberg’s historic Old Town below the Imperial Castle.

Try it yourself! Don’t be frustrated with this stupid obstacle, accept the challenge and have fun!
