“Scale” is the theme of the Word Press’ Weekly Photo Challenge for this week. Scale is about perspective, seemingly unusual sizing of objects in relation to other objects due to their placements relative to each other in the focal pane, or due to unusual viewpoints, for example by looking down from extreme heights or looking up at things from the ground.
This is a creative playground for us photographers with almost unlimited possibilities. Another week, another photo challenge from Word Press’ “The Daily Post”. The theme this time is “Windows“. And after being late with the challenge last week, I’m early this time 😉 . I can’t really show what was in front of my window this morning, as I was sitting next to an airplane window. And when, after a seemingly endless night, I opened the blinds this morning while we approached Amsterdam there was…..nothing. After some splendid warm and sunny late summer days in the Pacific Northwest I’m back to the European rainy autumn weather. But in a few hours I will be back home, so the weather will be not something I will overly care about the next days.

Fire Seat | 2017“Elemental” is the current theme of the weekly photo challenge (WPC) from Word Press’ “The Daily Post”. So I share four long exposure photographs representing the elements “fire”, “water”, “earth” and “air”. Anyone remembering the movie “Angels & Demons” ? First comes fire, where I experimented with long exposures to create the streaks. After two more abstract challenges in the past weeks we have a more hands on theme for this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge from Word Press’ “The Daily Post”: “Collage“.
When reading the motto of the challenge I immediately had these street photos in my mind, that I always wanted to post but never found a right context to do so.

I’m also glad I for this challenge because it provided me with an opportunity for a quick an easy post. If you’ve read my last post you know that I’m currently on a 12 Day – Round the World – business trip. The first leg took me to my usual project site in Portland, Oregon. During the flight across the Atlantic Ocean I was treated with some spectacular views on Greenland and North Canada and I was able to shoot some very nice photos, but the last two days in Rose City were really kind of crazy work wise, so I didn’t get to process my images from the flight yet.
So owing you some views of the Arctic North I leave you with this photo of a real Portland collection. So, even if under stress, little photo opportunities are everywhere, you just need to train your eye to see them.

This week the weekly photo challenge (WPC) from Word Press’ “The Daily Post” has the theme “Delta“. We are called to share a photo that signifies transitions and change. As this is very close last week’s challenge “Transient” I take a slight angle on the theme.
A delta is also the difference between two locations, the difference in time and distance between two locations. Both interpretations are covered by the above Street Photo I took in Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. The guy in the video screen of the gigantic clock working to determine the exact time by drawing a new minute hand. The plane behind the huge windows ready to cover the delta in distance and time to its overseas destination. Coincidentally, the big Airbus is from Delta Airlines. I took the photo with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and the mZuiko 40-150mm F/2.8 Pro Zoom.
Astoria-Megler-Bridge | Oregon | 2017
To also cover the much more traditional interpretation of a river delta here are two photographs from the Columbia River Delta in Oregon. The image of the Astoria-Megler-Bridge spanning the mouth of the Columbia River was taken at 13sec, f/20 and ISO 200. The photo of the ship was taken from the old docks in Astoria, image specs are 8sec f/16 and ISO 200. Both photos were taken with the Olympus PEN-F and the mZuiko 12-40mm F/2.8 Pro Zoom.

This week’s Weekly Photo Challenge has the theme “Transient”. Sure I have photos of driftwood, of a poppy bud the moment it pops open. But then I thought that Street Photography is all about capturing transient moments of life. Attempts to preserve a short, fleeting moment of life, with all its stories behind. Each of these situations is fully unique, a snapshot of life that will never happen again, a moment in time as we and the ones we photograph wander through our lives. “Focus” is the theme of this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge from Word Press’ “The Daily Post”. I can meet the challenge with one of my street photos that I took just this past Tuesday evening in Budapest.
A photograph has to convey emotion, has to have heart and soul to capture the viewer’s imagination. It does not have to be technically perfect, it does not have to perfectly in focus. Sometimes, being a bit blurred can even add to the message of an image. When you look at the works of the masters of the genre, like Henri Cartier-Bresson or Elliott Erwitt, many of their iconic photographs are not technically perfect, but have an abundance of heart and soul.
This photo of kissing teenage travelers I took on Budapest’s famous Fischerbastei (Halászbástya) with the parliament building providing the background is for me such an example where the focal point of an image does not need to perfectly in focus.
I took the photo with my Olympus PEN-F with the mZuiko 14-150mm F/4.0-5.6 travel zoom, image specs are 1/10 sec at f/6.3 and ISO 1600, 63mm focal length.
Shooting with a relatively low shutter speed at 1/10 sec (due to the low evening light) my lens was not fast enough with the motions of the young couple. This is also a good example why leaving the camera in “P-Mode” makes so much sense. When you see a motive that attracts you just compose and press the shutter, without fumbling with the settings. Because capturing a possibly imperfect image that means something to you is better than no photo at all. It might not be perfectly in focus. But it can have heart and soul.
