Self-Isolation

Two years into the pandemic, the family had its first case. Big Girl came down with Covid. Properly vaccinated and even boostered, her symptoms subsided after three days, but then she had to go into self-isolation for a good week, which turned out to be really hard for her. Living in the same house as grandma, aunt and cousin, she at least got her needed supplies delivered to her door. Being a pediatric oncology nurse, Big Girl took her self-isolation serious. Which meant we were able to see the kid only from down the sidewalk. But thankfully she’s healed, back at work now and up and running again.

February was a busy month that left not much time for photography and blogging. But I got myself a new camera. And sold a lot of my old APS-C stuff to pay for it.

And then, last weekend, after years of following each other’s blogs, I finally met another of my virtual friends face to face on the Streets of Nuremberg.

So plenty stories still to tell.

This kind of season

It was this kind of season – summarized in one image. Instead of being the usual Christmas City ablaze with lights, Nuremberg went through another subdued Holiday season. No Christmas markets, most public events canceled. Mask mandate everywhere and long lines in front of shops to get the mandatory vaccine certificate checked out.

Add the mostly gruesome weather of the last weeks into the equation, then you know why my trips onto the Streets of Nuremberg were rather limited in this kind of season. Below some random street shots that I captured during last Saturdays trip into town together with The Significant Other.

Light at the end of the tunnel

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Far in the distance, barely visible. Pessimists might even argue that, in all likelihood, it is the headlamp of an oncoming train. Well, Murphy’s law won’t happen in this tunnel. While indeed being an old railroad tunnel at the Ligurian coast, nowadays it belongs to bikers and hikers. So why I’m musing about a light at the end of a tunnel in Italy that, due to Covid restrictions in Europe, can’t even be reached these days from Germany?

What looks like a scene from the arctic is actually just a few kilometers from my house, on the Dillberg. With 600m (2000ft) above sea level it is one of the higher elevations in the area. A perfect place to for some sportive activities in the snow, properly socially distanced. Or as I call it, snowsolation.

Still need a present?

Do you still need a present? Well, you need to hurry. At least when you live in Germany. Tomorrow our government will announce that it’s gonna send the whole country into a total lockdown. From early next week until at least mid January, everything apart from super markets and drug stores will be closed. The originally planned easing of curfews over the holidays is likely to be withdrawn. Is it necessary? There is no doubt about it. The intensive care units in the Nuremberg area (as all over Germany) are filled to capacity. And cases are still rising significantly. There is no alternative to the total lockdown. It will be a very, very quiet Christmas.

Today I was revisiting some old photographs from the trip to Moshi, Tanzania, that The Significant Other and I took back in early 2016. I will apply a different editing style in Lightroom Classic, which will be fun. It is amazing, how different you look at your own images after having them let marinate on your hard disk for a couple of years. There will be quite a few posts coming with photographs from this trip. As it looks I will plenty of time to play with my archive in the next weeks. Oh, and I have got all my presents. Hopefully I will be able to see all the people to hand them over.

Alternative Xmas Market

Finally Friday, with both The Significant Other and myself having had a rough week from the jobs that pay the bills. Normally, this time of the year, we would head out to our local christmas market for fried sausages and some mulled wine to wind down and prepare for the weekend. Only that the Covid-lockdown has shut the door on all public events this December.

So I decided to have an alternative xmas market, right in our back yard, just for the family. I barbecued Franconian sausages, The Wife made the dough for some bread on sticks we fried above the fire bowl. Add some hot mulled wine and a Spotify christmas music list playing from a mobile speaker. The recent snow in the garden provided the perfect backdrop. And so we had our perfect start into the weekend anyway.

Fair enough – this is an older street photograph, but one I never posted. But doesn’t it fit perfectly into these crazy days? I guess the space suit works just as well for virus protection. But who wouldn’t want to beam up these days?

Positive side effects

Pretty Woman in a restaurant in Nuremberg Old Town

Who would have thought that Covid has some positive side effects. And I’m not talking global effects, like blue skies without contrails, clean city air and coast lines that see sea life returning. To compensate reduced occupancy due to distancing requirements, the City of Nuremberg allowed restaurants in the Old Town to put tables out on the streets combined with blocking traffic and turning streets into pop-up pedestrian zones.

On the weekend, The Significant Other and I made use of it, enjoying a dinner together with friends in an excellent French Restaurant in a beautiful alley in the Old Town below the magnificent towers of St. Sebald Church.

I took this photograph of my beautiful wife with the Leica M and the Elmarit-M F/2.8 28mm. Image specs are 1/25 sec @ f/3.4 and ISO 3200. The Leica handles the ISO quite well, the only challenge was to manually focus the rangefinder to make sure her profile is sharp. Who says a 28mm isn’t suitable for portraits? There is nothing like the smooth rendering of the Leica lenses shot wide open.

Distanced Observations

A couple of days ago, The Significant Other and I visited the Documentation Center of Nuremberg’s historic Nazi Party Rally Grounds. Instant Inspiration (32) – Shoot an object you love

“Instant Inspiration” is my series for you if you look for something to overcome “Photographer’s Block” or simply want to shoot something that you have never tried, or at least not recently.

Covid-19 confines many of us to our homes. Travel is impossible, and in some places the lockdown rules even prohibit us to venture out with our cameras. But that is no reason to keep the camera locked away until the sanctions are lifted. With Episode 32 of my “Instant Inspirations” I want to motivate to use the camera at home, and to extensively shoot an object you love.
