During last week’s stay in our “southern home” in Genoa, The Significant Other and I grabbed the opportunity to visit the World Press Photo Exhibition 2025 at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa. A hefty thunderstorm was passing through the city, so we gladly took the opportunity to spend some time indoors and explore this annual iconic photographic display. The exhibition was set up in the basement of the historic palace—once the seat of the Doges of the Republic of Genoa. To see more of it, continue after the jump…

As usual, the space was quiet, with only a few visitors around. The dimly lit rooms suited the nature of the exhibition. As always, the photojournalism on display was powerful — covering topics ranging from war and migration to climate change and everyday human resilience.

You know I am Drawn to the opportunity for some street photography in an exhibition. I shot a few impressions with my iPhone 14 Pro. I chose to work in black and white to emphasize light, contrast, and mood rather than color. It seemed to fit the tone of the environment and the stories told through the photographs.

While I usually prefer using my main camera for these types of visits, the iPhone’s flexibility and low-light performance were more than adequate in this setting, on top of being quite inconspicuous that way. If you’re in or near Genoa, or at another place the World Press Photo Exhibition 2025 is on display, the exhibition is well worth a visit. It’s a reminder of how photography continues to document, challenge, and inform about the state of our world and the society we live in.
