Castle on the Hill

I really don’t know why Ed Sheeran’s “Castle on the Hill” came into my mind when passing below medieval Mauterndorf Castle during a little afternoon stroll earlier today. But somehow it got stuck in my brain, so I keep singing it silently….

“I’m on my way
Driving at 90 down those country lanes
Singing to Tiny Dancer
And I miss the way you make me feel, and it’s real
When we watched the sunset over the castle on the hill”

Actually the 11th century castle is on hill above the old mountain town of Mauterndorf in the Austrian Alps, but you realize it only when looking at it from down below (see image after the jump). But I liked the black and white version (doesn’t the iPhone take awesome monochrome photographs?) better for the title image of the post 😉

After a December that really had stressed us out (for various reasons), The Significant Other, Big Boy and myself have finally gotten away and ventured into the Austrian Alps to spend the days until New Year with good friends in their mountain home in the Lungau region. Poor Big Girl had to remain behind, as brave hospital nurse she has to work shifts for nine days in a row 🙁

At least she doesn’t miss out on skiing, as there is not much snow left. It is much to warm and the last serious snow has come down four weeks ago. Back home in Germany, the weekend forecast calls for 20 degrees celsius (68 Fahrenheit), which will set a new record for December. Crazy times indeed.

Haven’t had much time for photography this year. The camera stayed home way too much, but at least the iPhone is always in the pocket for a quick shot when something catches the eye. Like these neatly stacked snow poles under the roof of a shed we passed this afternoon.

Wrapping up the another year, I will now dive into the Lightroom archives of 2022 and look for a couple of highlights for my wrap up post of this truly crazy year.

Have a great last weekend of 2022

Marcus

  1. Just wanted to chime in here as a pilot who has flown over this beautiful castle on the hill. I have to admit, I was a little tipsy on my last flight over it and I kept singing that Ed Sheeran song in my head too. Can’t believe it’s already the end of the year, time flies when you’re soaring through the skies! Anyway, thanks for sharing these great photos of the castle and town. I’ll have to plan a layover in Mauterndorf sometime soon to check it out for myself. Safe travels to all!
